Cinemateca Portuguesa stands at Rua Barata Salgueiro 39, 1269-059 Lisboa, in the Príncipe Real neighbourhood. It is a public institution under the Ministry of Culture whose mission is to protect and spread Portugal's film heritage, and it also works as a film archive that runs daily screenings of films from around the world. It opens Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 01:00 and does not open on Sundays. The institution dates from 1948, under the Estado Novo regime, and grew from a collection that came from the former National Propaganda Secretariat, later renamed the National Information Secretariat. Its first director was Manuel Félix Ribeiro, who worked for that secretariat. In 1956 it became a member of the International Federation of Film Archives, and in the same year it inaugurated its first room of its own for exhibitions. On 29 September 1958 it held its first public, independent screening at Palace Foz, and its Library opened to the public the following day. It became an autonomous institution in 1980. In 1979 the Portuguese state bought number 39, a residence that had belonged to the family of lawyer and politician Morais Carvalho. The house had been built on land purchased from Barata Salgueiro himself in 1887. The new cinema opened to the public in 1980. Between 2001 and 2002 the building was restored by architects Alberto Castro Nunes and António Maria Braga, and activities moved temporarily to the Palácio Foz. The premises reopened in December 2002 with refurbished screening rooms and a museum space called 39 Degraus. Today the facilities include two cinemas, named after Félix Ribeiro and Luís de Pina, along with an archive and a Cinema Museum. In the Cupid Room, an exhibit shows Magic Lanterns, and further collections cover sound, lighting, video, decorative objects and pre-cinema devices. A bookshop stocks film books and DVDs. A restaurant with a terrace is on the same floor, and the 39 Degraus restaurant and cafe takes its name as a nod to Hitchcock's The 39 Steps. The programme includes debates, author presentations, film cycles and indie film festivals, and Cinemateca Júnior is aimed at younger audiences. In summer, open-air screenings are shown in the original language with Portuguese subtitles. Visit Lisboa lists a Tripadvisor traveller rating of 4.4 from 55 reviews.
