Convento da GraçaThe Igreja e Convento da Graça is located on Largo da Graça in the Graça area of Lisbon. This church is on the highest hill in Lisbon and has wonderful panoramic views of the Alfama and the castle districts of Lisbon. Ride the 28 tram to the Graça stop. The Augustinians built the monastery on this site in the 13th century. This was the location where King Dom Afonso Henriques placed his troops during the 1147 siege of Lisbon. In 1305 the house of Santo Agostinho de Lisboa was renamed to Nossa Senhora da Graça. Before he left on his voyage to India, Afonso de Albuquerque built a chapel in this church. The church and the monastery were rebuilt in the 16th century. After the earthquake, the church and monastery were rebuilt in the Baroque style. The church has a single bell tower. The bell tower of the church was completed in 1738. In 1834, along with the rest of the convents and monasteries of Portugal, this was also closed. The Graça monastery was used by the army as a military barracks. The church contains tiles from the 16th to 19th centuries, as well as several side chapels. The convent has a cloister and 18th century tiles. The church contains a processional image of Jesus Christ which is carried though the streets. This has been the case since 1587. From 2023, visitors can access a terrace located at the top of the church, which provides views over the Castle and other areas of Lisbon. The church and convent are free to visit, however, the terrace costs €5.00, with reduced prices for children. The site is open every day. There are a number of places of interest in the area, including the small Augusto Gil Garden which is next to the church, the Jardim da Cerca da Graça, Miradouro da Senhora do Monte.GraçaChurches & Religious Sites
