Quiosque Ribeira das NausOpens in a new tabCais do Sodré · Cafés & Coffee ShopsQuiosque Ribeira das Naus is a kiosk with a terrace in Lisbon, standing on the bank of the Tagus River, which the Portuguese call the Tejo. It sits at Avenida Ribeira das Naus 5, 1200-000 Lisboa, in the Cais do Sodré neighbourhood, and it opens every day from 11:00 to 23:00. The avenue links Cais do Sodré with Praça do Comércio, and the kiosk stands in the middle of it. The terrace has tables, and sun loungers are available for anyone who would rather sunbathe or read a book. The kiosk serves light meals and drinks. For lunch there are pizzas and sandwiches, and dinner menus are mentioned too. Lemonade and sangria are suggested to go with the food. The atmosphere is relaxed, and Portuguese mixes with many other languages, because the view draws tourists and locals alike. The river is the main scenery, and the spot is described as a good choice for watching the sunset in the evening. The Ribeira das Naus stretch measures about a thousand metres, with a pedestrian corridor beside the river and two artificial lakes, and cars circulate between them. After decades as a road, the area was rehabilitated as public space, returning the river to pedestrians. People run there, families stroll at weekends, and visitors have a drink at the end of the day. A large sloping lawn suits resting or picnics, and a stone staircase inspired by old ship launch ramps pays tribute to the site's naval past. Swimming in the Tagus is prohibited because of currents and maritime traffic, although you can dip your feet. The name comes from the naus, the ships that were built and maintained on this spot, which served as a shipyard. Many ships of the Portuguese navigators were built along this riverside. The location was chosen for its closeness to the new Ribeira palace, built in 1498 in the Terreiro do Paço. In the eighteenth century the Royal Navy Arsenal occupied the area, and it stayed until 1938. The 1755 earthquake destroyed the place completely, and it was rebuilt as part of the Baixa Pombalina plan. Its history now spans more than 400 years. Along the avenue, other terraces and kiosks also offer drinks and snacks, and a traditional ginjinha or a pastel de nata is suggested. Late afternoon is recommended for the sunset light, a blanket or towel suits the lawn, and the riverside path leads on to Belém.
Time Out Market LisboaOpens in a new tabCais do Sodré · Street Food & Food HallsTime Out Market Lisboa stands at Avenida 24 de Julho, 49 (Praça Dom Luís I), 1200-148 Lisboa, in the Cais do Sodré neighbourhood. It occupies part of the Mercado da Ribeira, a nineteenth-century building with an iron-and-glass roof, and it opens every day from 10:00 until midnight. The team at Time Out Portugal created it, and it opened in 2014 as the original Time Out Market. The operators call it the world's first gastronomic and cultural market, and one description adds that journalists curate it. The building is older than the food hall. The Mercado da Ribeira opened on 1 January 1882 as the Mercado da Ribeira Nova, to a design by engineer Frederico Ressano Garcia. Its iron frame was arranged around a central corridor with running water, which let fish and produce stay cool instead of sitting in open air. A fire destroyed the eastern section on 7 June 1893. In 1926 Lisbon City Council demolished the damaged structure and commissioned architect João Piloto to design a replacement, which reopened in 1930. That version has a large central dome, tiled outside and painted inside, ceramic entrance panels showing maritime scenes by Jorge Colaço, and frescoes of fruit and vegetables by Gabriel Constanti. The dome looked unusual above a produce market, so locals nicknamed the building Mesquita do Nabo, meaning the Turnip Mosque. Time Out got its space through a municipal concession. In October 2010 Lisbon City Council offered part of the building on a 20-year concession, covering roughly 5,000 m², which meant half of the ground floor and all of the first floor. Time Out Lisboa was the only bidder. It proposed inviting restaurants and chefs it had recommended in its reviews to run permanent stalls. The other half of the building still works as a municipal market with fish, fruit and vegetable stalls. Inside the market hall are 26 restaurants, 8 bars, a dozen shops, an events venue and a cooking academy. Named eateries include Libertà Pasta Bar, Marisqueira Azul, Duro de Matar, Pinóquio, Monte Mar and Café de São Bento. Henrique Sá Pessoa, who holds two stars at his restaurant Alma, runs Stall 13, where he sells slow-cooked suckling pig, and Marlene Vieira runs Stall 12, with roasted octopus and duck rice. Croqueteria offers a cuttlefish ink croquette and an alheira croquette, and Super Bock beer is poured at the central drink stalls. The Time Out Academy, equipped with support from Teka, seats 22 and hosts workshops, courses and show cooking.
Loja das ConservasOpens in a new tabCais do Sodré · RestaurantsLoja das Conservas stands at Rua do Arsenal 130, 1100-040 Lisboa, in the Cais do Sodré neighbourhood, on a busy downtown corner close to the waterfront. It is a specialty boutique and cultural showcase dedicated solely to the centuries-old Portuguese tradition of canned seafood. The doors are open every day of the week, from 10:00 to 20:00. This address housed the first unit of the project: it started trading in August 2013, proved an instant hit, and was followed by further stores in Lisbon and Porto as well as a restaurant. The shop is the official store of the National Association of Fish Canning Industries, which sponsors the project. The space is roomy and decorated with the colourful designs of different canneries, along with a mural honouring Portuguese cannery workers, and it invites visitors to learn something of the industry's long history. Products are organised by producer. Seventeen national canneries are represented, together offering more than 300 products, and some of them are export brands found only at this store. The range stretches from sardines to tuna, octopus and mussels, plus other seafood, drawn from more than a dozen canning factories across the country. The setting is described as cool, with a trendy deco that brings new life to the age-old craft of canned fish. The tins are considered collector's items and a good gift idea for anyone wishing to share this gourmet tradition. Products can also be bought online through the company's website, and orders over 25 units are handled by email at lojadasconservasonline@gmail.com. The Lisbon phone number is +351 911 181 210. Next door, the snack bar is called Petiscos, a word meaning snacks. It serves everything sold in the shop, and if an item is stocked but missing from the menu, the kitchen will prepare it for an extra fee. One visitor described stuffed squid in ink that came from a can, was reheated slightly so it stayed soft, and was filled with rice cooked in the ink with bits of seafood. Olive oil left on the plate was best mopped up with crusty bread, which arrived cold. Canned sardines come on a terracotta grill and are commonly grilled in their own oil, with a waiter lighting them; chopped tomatoes, olive oil and garlic can go on top. The same visitor noted that a lemonade cost more than an ice-cold beer.
O Bom, O Mau e O VilãoOpens in a new tabCais do Sodré · Bars & NightlifeO Bom, O Mau e O Vilão is a bar in the Cais do Sodré neighbourhood of Lisbon, at Rua do Alecrim 21, 1200-014 Lisboa. Its name comes from a Sergio Leone spaghetti western; in English the film is called The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Time Out describes the place as an ambitious project with several sides: a bar, a restaurant, a film club and a music venue, with a concert or DJ set every day. Other descriptions call it a retro cocktail bar with live music and many rooms, closer to a labyrinthine cultural hub than to a single-room pub. The venue occupies a converted residential building from the 18th century. It was designed to feel like wandering through an eccentric, artsy apartment rather than a commercial bar. The rooms are retro in style and colour-coded, with blue, pink, red and yellow spaces as well as private nooks. Several rooms carry striking murals by local artists. The concept is to offer different social settings under one roof, so a guest can start with a quiet chat over drinks in the front rooms and later move to a busy dance floor or a live gig further back. Time Out notes that house and electronica rule in most Lisbon bars, whereas here soul, funk, Afrobeat and jazz dominate. Checking the daily schedule ahead helps, since the lineup can mean smooth live jazz early in the week or an energetic DJ set over the weekend. Live music or DJ sets often start later in the evening, and the atmosphere builds after 10 PM. On the drinks side, classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned or the Negroni are made with quality spirits. A gin and tonic is also on offer, with a selection of gins and premium tonics, served in a large goblet. Reservations are not accepted, and seating works on a first-come, first-served basis. Because the venue is split into small, intimate rooms, finding a seat can get competitive after 10 PM, especially at weekends. It is worth exploring every room, since the mood changes from the front salon to the back dance floor. The bar is a short walk from Cais do Sodré station, reachable by metro or train, or on foot down from Chiado. It opens Tuesday to Thursday from 21:00 to 02:00, Friday and Saturday from 19:00 to 03:00, and Sunday from 21:00 to 02:00. It is closed on Mondays.
Pensão AmorOpens in a new tabCais do Sodré · Bars & NightlifePensão Amor stands at Rua do Alecrim 19, 1200-292 Lisboa, in the Cais do Sodré neighbourhood. Until the last century, sailors from many countries came ashore at Cais do Sodré, where bars carried the names of European capitals. It was the bohemian centre of the city, a place where bourgeois, writers, fado singers, spies and prostitutes all mingled. A period of decadence and abandonment followed, and the district was reborn when Pensão Amor opened in 2011. A thorough restoration was completed in 2022. Inside, the colour scheme is rich and crimson, and the walls carry erotic artworks. Crystal chandeliers, velvet sofas and shimmering curtains furnish the rooms, and quiet side rooms are set aside for intimate encounters. Frommer's compares the overall air to that of an opulent Edwardian bordello. A risqué bookshop is tucked away out back. Upstairs, in rooms that were once part of a real brothel, an eclectic mix of businesses operates: a pole dance studio, a spa and a luxury corset maker. By day, the venue works as a discreet meeting place for coffee or cocktails. After dark, the programme can include burlesque shows, live jazz, DJ sessions or literary tertulias. The rooms also serve at times as dance floors and as stages for surprise pole dance shows, themed parties, poetry meetings, plays and live music. One suggestion is to come between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM for a quiet drink while exploring the rooms and the art, and to come after 11:00 PM for the club atmosphere and live performances. In mid 2023 the Madam's Lodge opened, inviting guests to stay in the harlots' rooms. Personal objects, business documents and mysterious messages in every corner reveal the life of the old brothel in the 1960s, when prostitutes could legally practise. The lodge marks 60 years since prostitution was prohibited in Portugal. Rooms are soundproofed, though the nightlife strip outside may bring some residual hum. The venue is open Monday to Wednesday from noon to 2am and Thursday to Saturday from noon to 4am. Prices listed are 1€ for an espresso, 4€ for Portuguese brandy, around 8€ for cocktails and around 5€ for a plate of Portuguese cheese. The bar takes no reservations and works on a walk-in basis, with a queue likely at the door on Friday and Saturday nights. A second entrance at the back, on Rua Nova do Carvalho, leads past strip-show artworks lining the stairwell. Transport links are Cais do Sodré metro station and tram 25E.
Sala de CorteOpens in a new tabCais do Sodré · RestaurantsSala de Corte is a steakhouse located in the Cais do Sodré neighborhood of Lisbon at Praça Dom Luís I 7, 1200-148. It opened its doors in 2015. They serve lunch and dinner daily from 12pm to 3pm and from 7pm to 12am. The identity of this steakhouse rests on the cuts. The beef is aged at the restaurant and then cooked on a Josper charcoal grill. The head chef at Sala de Corte is Antonio Ribeiro. The cuts on the menu include Vazia, Entrecôte, Lombo, Chateaubriand, Lomo Bajo, T-Bone and Kobe Rib Eye. The Chuleton de Vaca Vieja is a dry aged, bone-in Rib Eye that is also listed on the menu. It is also suggested that customers order the spinach esparregado and truffle mashed potatoes as side dishes. It is also said that the waiting staff assists customers with questions and recommendations about the cuts and meat ordering process, especially if a group is sharing. The Kobe Rib Eye is from Japan, and is certified by the Kobe Beef Marketing & Distribution Promotion Association. Displays at the restaurant include a bronze statuette given to stores endorsed to sell the certified beef. Only a small number of eateries outside Japan have this designation. In 2026, World's Best Steak Restaurants published its first list of the 50 best steak restaurants in Europe, and Sala de Corte was listed in 50th place. It is the only steakhouse in Portugal to receive this recognition. Other restaurants in the ranking include establishments in Milan, Paris, Madrid, Glasgow, and Barcelona. The recognition, according to Sala de Corte, is an indicator of the hard work of the staff. To ensure you get a table, you should make a reservation. One article suggests you may need to make a reservation weeks in advance.
