Taberna Sal GrossoOpens in a new tabAlfama · RestaurantsTaberna Sal Grosso is a small restaurant at Calçada do Forte 22, 1100-256 Lisboa, in the Alfama neighbourhood, next to Santa Apolónia station. It is open every day of the week, from 12:30 to 16:00 for lunch and again from 19:00 to 23:00 in the evening. The room holds 27 seats, and the kitchen serves Portuguese food. Because of the limited space, it is the only restaurant in its group that does not accept pets. The décor is rustic, and the menu is written on a slate wall. The owners describe the place as combining the feel of a traditional tavern with a contemporary touch. Dishes are meant to be shared, so the relaxed atmosphere suits a meal with friends or family. One guide suggests ordering two to three items per person, beginning with lighter petiscos before moving on to heavier meat or fish dishes. The tavern opened in 2015 under Joaquim Saragga, its chef and owner. Saragga lost a job and decided to change course in life. As a student in London, Saragga cooked for roommates and remembered feeling happy in the kitchen, so culinary school followed, then a Masters in gastronomy. Saragga told one visiting writer the aim was not to innovate but to serve favourite traditional recipes made with local, seasonal ingredients, cooking what the chef likes to eat. Prices are described as modest. The tavern charges no couvert, offers only two house wines, which are described as very drinkable, plus a few artisanal beers, and keeps desserts modestly priced. At lunch, writers from Salt of Portugal tried a watercress and orange salad, codfish cakes, manta ray and garlic, oxtail with quince, and codfish and chickpeas, and called everything perfect. Since July 2021 the restaurant has been run by a new team, which took over the Alfama project after it had been closed since COVID, acquired the concept and brand, and reopened it in a renovated space. The group now has three restaurants: this one, another in São Bento in Lisbon, and one in Évora, in the Alentejo region. Booking is advised. Writers from Salt of Portugal found a group gathered at the door trying to get a table, and they made a reservation for lunch two days later. Reservations can be made through the official website, tabernasalgrosso.pt, or by calling 910 137 713, a national mobile number. The approach on foot from Santa Apolónia station is a steep cobbled climb up the calçada to number 22.
Lisboa Tu e EuOpens in a new tabAlfama · RestaurantsLisboa Tu e Eu is a restaurant in the Alfama neighbourhood of Lisbon, at Rua Adiça 58, 1100-538 Lisboa. It is tucked into the historic, labyrinthine alleyways of the district, among steep cobblestone lanes, and it operates as a neighbourhood tasca, the Portuguese word for a traditional tavern. The place is tiny, and it is often described as a hole-in-the-wall. It sits away from the heavily commercial tourist strips and is a favourite with diners. The kitchen does not serve formal, multi-course seated meals. It concentrates instead on authentic Portuguese small plates and petiscos, made with fresh ingredients. The food is described as classic, unpretentious, home-cooked Portuguese seafood and comfort cooking, designed to be shared. The atmosphere is cozy, lively and intimate. Eating here is said to feel less like visiting a commercial restaurant and more like stepping into a local family's home. Space is so limited that diners end up practically rubbing shoulders, and a resident cat may be seen lounging nearby. The listed opening hours cover every day of the week, Monday to Sunday, from 09:30 to 23:00. The original location on Rua Adiça does not take bookings, and because of its microscopic size, groups are capped at a maximum of five people. Lines form quickly at peak lunch and dinner times, so the advice is to arrive early or be ready to wait on the stairs outside. The group limit is tied to the small size of the room, while the lines are tied to the venue's popularity as a favourite away from the tourist strips. Payment is typically cash only at this original address. Visitors are advised to bring around €40-€60 in small bills, as cards are typically not accepted. The tight layout and the uneven cobblestones of Alfama mean the venue is not wheelchair accessible. On Tripadvisor the restaurant holds a rating of around 4.5 out of 5 across thousands of reviews. Diners praise its heartwarming service, its flavour-to-price ratio and its vibrant soul. The main caveats they mention are the long waits, with lines stretching out at busy times, and the strict no-reservation policy. Because of its popularity and small size, a nearby sibling location, Lisboa Tu & Eu 2, has opened at Escadinhas das Portas do Mar 4. It is a separate address from the original, which remains the one purists seek out.

Quiosque Portas do SolOpens in a new tabAlfama · Cafés & Coffee ShopsQuiosque Portas do Sol is an open-air kiosk café standing on the Largo Portas do Sol, a belvedere square in the Alfama neighbourhood of Lisbon. Its address is Largo Portas do Sol, 1100-411 Lisboa. Time Out lists it among the coffee shops in the Castelo de São Jorge area, and a Google overview notes that the Castle of São Jorge is close by. Opening hours in the listing data run from 09:00 to 24:00, every day of the week, whereas Time Out's page gives daily 11am to 10pm. Time Out describes the kiosk as a good spot for watching the sunrise, the sunset and nearly everything that happens between the two. The menu it mentions includes sangria, beer, cocktails and bottles of water. Google's overview suggests going early in the morning for a quiet coffee with unobstructed sunrise views, or in the late afternoon for a golden-hour drink at sunset. It calls the sunset spectacular and adds that the surrounding terrace gets very packed as a result. Because of the prime location, the overview says, tables fill up fast. When no seat is free, it suggests doing what the locals do: order a drink to go at the counter and lean against the stone wall that looks out over the river. On payment, it says most Lisbon kiosks accept contactless cards and mobile payments, but a small amount of cash helps for quick service during peak rush hours. Quiosques in general are small huts found on many squares around Lisbon, serving drinks from draught beer and spirits to soft drinks and coffee, plus simple meals. One writer says that at the top of any steep Lisbon hill there is always a quiosque ready with freshly squeezed orange juice. Historic examples are described as small, ornate, octagonal pavilions surrounded by metal tables and chairs. The first refreshment kiosk, a Quiosque de Refresco, opened in Rossio Square in 1869. Kiosks declined in the mid-20th century under the dictatorship, when public gatherings were discouraged, and a preservation project in 2009 rescued these structures from decay. On coffee, the same writer says it costs only around €0.70 or €0.80 in a lot of places, and that sitting down to enjoy one, even for a couple of minutes, is very common in Portugal. Since the kiosk is in Alfama and near the castle, the Google overview recommends using it as a mid-walk break to recharge before wandering down the steep, winding medieval alleys.

Museu do FadoOpens in a new tabAlfama · MuseumsThe Museu do Fado is a municipal museum in Alfama, Lisbon, at Largo do Chafariz de Dentro 1, 1100-139 Lisboa. It is devoted to fado, the urban song tradition that UNESCO recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 27 November 2011. The museum opened on 25 September 1998 and is run by EGEAC, the Lisbon municipal company that rebranded as Lisboa Cultura in 2024. The building opened in 1868 as the Estação Elevatória de Águas de Alfama, a coal-fired steam pumping station designed by engineers Joaquim Pires de Sousa Gomes and Paiva Couceiro to push water uphill into Lisbon's distribution network. Between 1974 and 1990 it served as a work centre for the Portuguese Communist Party. The restoration and extension were designed by architects João and José Daniel Santa-Rita. Inside, the permanent exhibition is interactive and follows fado from its nineteenth-century origins in Lisbon to the present. It covers the Portuguese guitar, fado houses, and fado on stage, radio, film and television, along with hundreds of performers, and listening stations are placed throughout. Instruments, costumes, scores and trophies are displayed among paintings such as José Malhoa's O Fado, from 1910, which shows a guitarist and his listener in a humble Lisbon room and is on loan from the Museu de Lisboa. The museum also stages temporary exhibitions, including Variations to Carlos Paredes, listed for 7 Jun 2025 to 31 Oct, about the Portuguese guitar player Carlos Paredes (1925-2004). Other parts of the museum include a digital sound archive with recordings of fado going back to the early 20th century, a documentation centre, an auditorium, a gift shop and a school of Portuguese guitar. A workshop area, the Oficina da Guitarra, is in Largo das Alcaçarias, 200 metres from the museum. The educational service offers guided visits and singing visits, and audio guides are available in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish, including a children's version. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30, and closed on Mondays and on 1 January, 1 May, 24 December, 25 December and 31 December. Adult admission is €5, with EUR 2.50 for ages 13-25 and EUR 4 for seniors 65+. Children up to 12, Lisboa Card holders, and Lisbon residents on Sundays and holidays until 14:00 enter free. The museum is wheelchair accessible, and two manual wheelchairs are available on free loan. Santa Apolónia station, served by the Metro Blue line and CP trains, is a five-minute walk away.
