    Parks & Gardens
The Jardim Botânico Tropical, or Tropical Botanical Garden, sits on Calçada do Galvão in the Belém district of Lisbon, beside the Jerónimos Monastery. It covers 5 hectares, about 12 acres, and was laid out in 1912. It has carried several names over time: Colonial Garden, then Garden of the Colonies, and later Tropical Garden. At present it is trying to recover from years of neglect, but it remains a peaceful place to escape the tourist crowds of Belém. The plant collection holds more than 600 species of exotic plants and trees from tropical regions of the world, including Africa, Asia and South America. Most of it is tropical or subtropical and comes from Portugal's former colonies. Palm trees stand by the entrance, and dragon trees native to the Canary Islands and Madeira grow here too. The scent of cinnamon and cacao trees fills the air. Art and architecture are spread through the grounds. There are 18th-century marble sculptures by the Italian artists Giuseppe Mazzuoli and Bernardino Ludovici. Other pieces date from 1940 and the Portuguese World Exhibition, including tile panels with colonial themes, busts of Africans and Asians, and the Arch of Macau, which marks the entrance to an Oriental garden. That garden seeks to recreate the mood of Asian gardens with narrow rails, uneven ground and water features, and bamboo predominates. Calheta Palace, a baroque building from the 1600s, was the residence of the Counts of Calheta until King João V acquired it in 1726. It now houses an exhibition space and a library, and hosts temporary exhibitions. Peacocks, ducks, geese, swans and chickens roam the grounds, waddling among the giant palm trees and around the ponds, and they draw much of the visitors' attention. From April to September the garden opens daily from 09:00 to 20:00, and from October to March daily from 10:00 to 17:00. It is closed on 1 January and 25 December. Admission is €4.00 for adults and €2.00 for children aged 10 to 17, and free for under-10s. A family ticket for two adults and two children costs €10. The Lisboa Card does not include admission. The Cascais train from Cais do Sodré station reaches Belém in 7 minutes, and the garden is a short walk from there. Tram 15 also stops a few feet from the gate. The Jerónimos Monastery, Maritime Museum and National Archaeology Museum are across the road, while the Royal Botanical Garden of Ajuda and Ajuda Palace are about a 15-minute walk uphill.

  4. Jardim da Praça do Império, Lisbon
    Jardim da Praça do Império
    Belém
    Parks & Gardens
Jardim da Praça do Império is a city garden in the Belém district of Lisbon, at Praça do Império, 1400-206 Lisboa. It fills the centre of Empire Square, a large square built for the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition. The square commemorates the power and greatness of the old Portuguese Empire, and it is described as the largest square of the Iberian Peninsula and one of the largest in Europe. The 15th century Jerónimos Monastery borders the area on the north side, and the garden is a spot to relax while looking at it. The space consists of formal walkways and gardens, and it occupies what was once Belém's beachfront. Its rectangular layout is divided into interconnected quadrangles, creating passages and green areas. Converging pathways lead to an illuminated fountain at the centre, set on a square platform. A sizable fountain stands in the middle of the garden. Resting beside it, visitors can let the breeze provide a refreshing shower. Beyond the fountain, the gardens show coats of arms associated with or attributed to explorers from the Age of Discovery. Thirty floral coats of arms represent 18 Portuguese districts, archipelagos and former colonies, each adorned with the crosses of Christ and Avis. A national emblem made of boxwood and flowers can also be found. Along the southern edge, near Avenida da Índia, statues of hippocamps, meaning seahorses, overlook reflective pools. On the eastern edge of the park stands the Overseas Palace, Palácio do Ultramar, which dates back to the 1950s. In 1973 the municipal council of Lisbon added a commemorative monument to the poet Augusto Gil (1873-1929), with a bronze medallion and an inscription. The square is especially popular on Saturday mornings, when the Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém often hosts weddings and photo sessions extend into the square. A visit takes about 30 minutes. Tram Line 15 serves the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos stop, and a tunnel lets you cross the road to reach the sea front. The 17th-century buildings along Rua Vieira Portuense have been converted into restaurants, most with outdoor seating, and dining value tends to improve further east along the street. Near the monastery, the café Antiga Confeitaria de Belém has served custard tarts since 1841. Nearby sights include the Centro Cultural de Belém, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the Museu de Marinha, the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia, the Museu de Arte Popular and the Museu Colecao Berardo.
