Carmo Archaeological MuseumLargo do Carmo, 1200-092 Lisboa houses the Carmo Archaeological Museum in the former Carmo Convent. The Convent reflects the ruins of a Gothic style convent and church. The Carmelite Convent was founded in 1389 by Nuno Álvares Pereira, who later became part of the Carmelite Order. One of the greatest disasters to occur in the history of the Convent was on 1 November 1755, during Mass. The roof of the convent, along with other surrounding structures in Lisbon collapsed, due to the Great Lisbon earthquake. The Convent Library was also destroyed, along with 5000 books. Reconstruction work was commissioned the following year. The convent was closed in 1834, as part of the project to dissolve all religious Orders. It was reconverted into an Archaeology and Art museum. In 1864 the Portuguese Association of Archaeologists occupied the convent, and opened the first of its kind in Portugal. This museum, housed in the former sacristy, displays artifacts from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. Pieces include King Ferdinand I’s Gothic tomb, Queen Maria Anna of Austria’s Baroque tomb, a Roman sarcophagus, hand axes, and Egyptian and Peruvian mummies. You can also find azulejo, medieval tombstones, and other miscellaneous artifacts. Plan to spend about 1-1.5 hours here. Also, check the weather as the Nave is open to the elements. The museum is closed on Sundays, January 1st, May 1st, and December 25th. From November to April hours are 10am to 6pm. From May to October hours are 10am to 7pm. During Easter and from December 26th to January 6th hours are extended. Adults tickets are 7 euros. Students and seniors (65+) are 5 euros as are Portuguese residents. Children 14 and under are free with an adult. The museum can be reached via Bus 758 or Tram 28. It is near the Baixa-Chiado metro and the Elevador de Santa Justa. Food and drink are not allowed and flash photography is prohibited.ChiadoMuseums

Chiado MuseumIn English, the museum is called the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC). Its location on the streets of Chiado, Rua Serpa Pinto 4, 1200-444 Lisboa, includes Rua Capelo 13, according to Visit Lisboa. Beginning in the mid-19th century, MNAC collects, documents and exhibits the main trends and movements in Portuguese visual arts. The National Museum of Ancient Art encompasses all Portuguese visual arts before the mid-19th century. The collections of MNAC include works from Romanticism, Naturalism, Symbolism, as well as works of Modernism and other movements up to contemporary art. The collections are on multiple levels and are organized to be viewable in a logical order. Permanent collections are supplemented by temporary exhibitions. Other activities, such as conferences and seminars, as well as guided tours, are also offered. The museum was founded in 1911. It was originally housed in the convent of São Francisco da Cidade, which was severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake. After the 1988 Lisbon fires, the convent was redesigned and extended by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, and reopened in 1994. The interior spaces of the museum offer an inviting setting away from the main tourism arteries. The museum is closed on Mondays. Admission is free with the Lisboa Card. Official tickets to the museum can be purchased for €10, with mobile vouchers, from Satoorday. No changes or cancellations are permitted. The tickets are valid for a shift, which is either 10:00 to 14:00 or 14:00 to closure. Tickets purchased on site are reduced for senior citizens aged 65 and older. The museum is wheelchair accessible. Tripadvisor gives it a rating of 3.5 from 178 reviews.ChiadoMuseums

Elevador de Santa JustaThis vertical street connection is known as the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Santa Justa Lift. It is a tower with neo-Gothic architecture made of iron and a height of 45 to 47 meters, located at Rua de Santa Justa, 1200-093, Lisboa, Portugal. The Lift is composed of an iron framework with two wooden and brass framed cabins. One of the blog writers mentions that these cabins help transport twenty people at a time and take 15 seconds to travel to the top of the Lift. The Lift is open with hours varying from 7 am to 11 pm in the summer and 7:30 am to 8:30 pm in the winter. The cost of a ticket to ride the Lift is €5.30. The price of the ticket is covered by the Lisboa Card, and a 24 hour Viva Viagem card transport ticket helps cover the cost of the Lift. The author mentions that during the off season the line to take the Lift was extremely long and to check official websites as information may be out of date. Visitors who do not want to wait in line can walk up to the top. Take photos of the lift from the street, walk up the steps and follow Rua do Carmo. Take your first right on Rua Garrett and immediately after take Calçada do Sacramento which leads to Largo do Carmo. Take the trail on the right that goes by the ruins of the Carmo Convent. The trail ends at Bellalisa Elevador. There are stairs that lead to the lift. The bridge that connects to the top of the lift is free. The bridge and area around the lifts have great views of the city. From the top there is a view of the Carmo convent and ruins, Castelo de São Jorge, Rossio Square, Lisbon cathedral and other views listed on the blog.ChiadoSights & Landmarks
