Estufa FriaWhich has come to be known as Estufa Fria (Cold Greenhouse) was once a basalt quarry. Located in Lisbon's Parque Eduardo VII, it is now home to a number of exotic plants once planned to be transplanted to Lisbon's Avenida da Liberdade. The plant transplantation project began in the early 20th century but was halted with the outbreak of World War I. During this time the plants flourished and the Lisbon Council decided to develop the site as a botanical garden. At this stage the site became known as Estufa Fria. Other sources state that a large auditorium and lake were added to the park. 1975 saw the construction of the Estufa Quente (Hot Greenhouse) which is home to coffee and mango trees, and the Estufa Doce (Sweet Greenhouse) which is home to a variety of succulents. The Hot and Sweet Greenhouses are built against the quarry wall. The Cold Greenhouse relies on no direct heating methods, and is instead shielded from the cold of winter with a fixed wooden framework, which also helps to lessen the Greenhouse's interior temperatures during the warmer months. Species from China, Australia, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, the Antilles and Korea, have been grown successfully within the Cold Greenhouse. Over 300 different plant species are currently within the greenhouses, including Dicksonia antarctica (Tasmanian tree ferns) as well as camellias and azaleas. Other species reported within the cold greenhouses include various rhododendrons, green bananas, colocasias, and strelitzias. Walking paths, gravel trails and stone steps throughout the greenhouses provide visitors many different vantage points and walking opportunities, including a view of the old quarry from a walkway along the bedrock. The main entrance is located by a lake. Watercourses and caves provide a variety of lush and romantic scenery throughout the greenhouses. One visitor over 65 reported paying 1.55 euros for admission. The greenhouses have a total of 636 reviews and a score of 4.4 on Tripadvisor. For questions contact: 351218170996 or estufafria@cm-lisboa.pt.Avenidas NovasParks & Gardens
