Lisbon Central MosqueThe Lisbon Central Mosque is located in Rua da Mesquita 2, 1070-238 Lisboa, Portugal. Although listed in the Avenidas Novas area, it is located in Campolide. It is the largest mosque in Portugal, and the primary mosque in Lisbon. It is of the Sunni school of Islam, and the imam is Sheikh David Munir. Request for its construction was made in 1966, but it was only approved in 1978. The increased status of some of the Arab nations after the 1973 oil crisis may have contributed to the approval. Construction lasted from 1978 to 1985. There are two architects of record. One is João Paulo Conceição, and the other is António Maria Braga. The latter won the 2019 Rafael Manzano Prize. The Mosque has four minarets. It incorporates local architectural styles of Portugal. It is equipped with reception halls and an auditorium. It also has other facilities of a cultural center, a library, and social services. The main prayer hall has Islamic artwork and architecture. It is equipped to accommodate more than 1000 worshippers. In addition to worship, the mosque has numerous events including lectures, festivals, and classes,. It supports and promotes public appreciation of Islamic culture and serves as the spiritual center of the residents of the country who practice the Islamic faith. It is open Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 4:30pm and is closed on weekends. The mornings are reportedly less busy. It is approximately a 4 to 5 minute walk from either the Praça de Espanha or Parque metro stations. To enter the mosque, visitors must modestly dress with knees and shoulders covered. Also, all shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall. Visitors must not enter the prayer rooms while in use and must be respectful of others.
