Fábrica da NataOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · Cafés & Coffee Shops
Valdo GattiOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · RestaurantsValdo Gatti is a restaurant in the Bairro Alto neighbourhood of Lisbon, at Rua do Grémio Lusitano 13, 1200-211 Lisboa. It describes itself as authentically Italian, serving handcrafted pizza made with natural and organic ingredients. Wood-fired pizzas are the signature dish, and the kitchen also prepares gnocchi, a truffle mushroom risotto and house-made desserts. Menu entries include Fiorentina, Salsiccia e patata, Bufalotta and a vegan Pannacotta. The interior is described as cozy and rustic. The dough is the starting point of the cooking. It begins with organic semi-wholewheat flour that is entirely Italian in origin and made from grain that is not genetically modified; the menu names Farinha Petra Quaglia Bio. To this the kitchen adds its own homemade natural yeast, called lievito madre, together with water, hand-harvested natural salt and cold-pressed organic virgin olive oil. The dough then rises slowly in a controlled environment and temperature, for an average of 2 days. Pizzaiolos stretch it by hand to form a cornicione, which gives the crust a soft edge. Fresh, natural and organic toppings go on last. The restaurant says the result is a natural, artisan pizza that is low in gluten and easy to digest. The restaurant works only with farmers and producers in Italy and Portugal who share its sustainable values. Suppliers named on the menu include Dulfar Bio for olive oil, Salumificio Pedrazzoli, Quintas da Caldeirinha, Amoreira da Torre, Ponte Reale Bio for mozzarella and Bufala DOP Campana, and Tomarchio Bio Siciliana. Over 90% of its products are organic, fresh and natural. It avoids pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified foods, hormones and antibiotics as far as possible, and it speaks of a toxic-free environment. Vegetarian and vegan options are on offer. The restaurant opens Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 16:00 and again from 17:00 to 23:00, and on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 23:00. Guests are served in order of arrival. When no table is free, they can leave a name and contact on a virtual waiting list and will be told when one opens. Tables that are still available can also be reserved online. For those who prefer to eat at home, delivery goes through the Glovo app, though the restaurant warns that the experience and the quality of the product differ once delivered. Parking in the narrow cobblestone streets of Bairro Alto is difficult, so a taxi, ride-share or public transit is suggested, such as the Elevador da Glória funicular or Bus 758.
Coliseu dos RecreiosOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · Theatres, Cinemas & Music VenuesThe Coliseu dos Recreios is an auditorium and concert hall located at Rua das Portas de Santo Antão 96 in the Bairro Alto district of Lisbon. It is on a busy street full of foot traffic. Capacity varies depending on the event set-up. The hall opened on August 14, 1890 with the operetta Boccaccio by the Croatian composer Suppé. The hall was designed in the form of a nonagon. The roof of the Coliseu dos Recreios is an iron dome constructed in Germany. The dome measures 48.68 meters. It was raised into place at a rate of 2 meters per hour. Also in 1890, circus performances started, and have been an important part of cultural activities at the Coliseu ever since. The first registered performance was on the 18th of October of that year. An Equestrian and Acrobatic Company combined several performances including Awata the Japanese juggler, Mlle. Jany the equestrian high-school performer, Virginia Aragón, the Christian family acrobats, Kitchee who used dry bamboo. In addition, Hagen-beck displayed trained elephants, a performer by the name Fernandez used the horizontal bar, and there were several clowns. A Christmas circus is held at the Coliseu, and the 2026 edition will be held from the 6th of December to the 27th of December. From 1923, Ricardo Covões expanded its cultural program. Types of performances at the Coliseu were revue shows, skating, and boxing, as well as operas, plays, and ballets. Masked Balls were also hosted at the Coliseu. He implemented an affordable pricing policy, so that the public could have easier access to culture. The 26th of February of 1994 was the reopening of the Coliseu under the “Lisboa 94” program. From 2025, the Coliseu also has the Coliseu Club, which is a smaller stage for shows and concerts. Starting from October of 2026, there will be a great diversity of performances at the Coliseu. The show Gilsons, will be performed on the 17th. Followed by “Coisas Naturais”, performed by Marina Sena, on the 25th. Rossini’s O Barbeiro de Sevilha will be performed on the 8th of November. Tickets can be purchased at coliseulisboa.com.
Estrela da BicaOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · RestaurantsEstrela da Bica is a restaurant and bar at Travessa do Cabral 33, 1200-073 Lisboa, listed under the Bairro Alto neighbourhood. It is run by women and works as a neighbourhood restaurant, set in a steep, narrow lane in the historic Bica district of Lisbon. That quarter has traditionally been home to fishing and working-class families. The restaurant stands right beside the Bica Funicular, known as Ascensor da Bica, and close to the former home of the fado singer Fernando Farinha. Inside, the look is artistic and laid-back. The furnishings are vintage and were salvaged from a school: rustic wooden tables, maps on the walls, and chalkboards where the menu is written. Another visitor account mentions stone walls and trams rattling past right outside. Time Out says the lower end of Bica has become trendy and that the place draws an arty crowd. The cooking sits between a traditional Portuguese tavern and a modern, globally inspired tapas bar. Dishes are contemporary small plates meant for sharing, with both vegetarian and meat options. Time Out noted that the food differs from the average Lisbon tavern, citing beetroot burgers and salmon with a chia crust. A Trip.com post points to homemade pasta, including tagliatelle with truffle, and to desserts such as chocolate mousse and lemon tart. To drink, the venue offers natural wines and craft cocktails, and sparkling water is also on hand. When it opened, it was considered a pioneer among the early modern, creative culinary spots in Bica. It arrived as contemporary middle-class and artistic interest began bringing new life to the area, before the district became a major tourist hub. Doors open at 19:00. On Monday the restaurant closes at 23:30, from Tuesday to Saturday it stays open until midnight, and it is closed on Sundays. The dining room is small, and walk-ins during peak dinner hours often face a long wait, so booking ahead through the venue's Instagram or by phone is advised; the number is (+351) 21 347 3310. The Trip.com post suggests visiting on a weeknight to avoid queues and to get a window seat. For getting there, Time Out lists Metro Baixa-Chiado or Cais do Sodré, and Tram 28; the walk from Bairro Alto or from Cais do Sodré, known as Pink Street, is about five minutes. The lane is a steep, cobbled hill, so high heels are best left at home. In a 2016 listing, Time Out gave main courses as costing €8.70 to €13.

It also offers luggage storage and locker room facilities, as well as a safe deposit box. The hostel is also equipped with air conditioning and heating. Check-in is between 14:00 and 23:59, and guests must check out by 12:00. The hostel has a 7.1/10 rating on a booking site, and is described as Good. The area is bohemian and has a lively, young, and unpretentious vibe. The surrounding area can be quite loud at night. A number of restaurants and bars are located nearby. It is a budget hostel. Duque da RuaOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · Bars & NightlifeDuque da Rua is a fado, vinhos e tapas bar at Rua do Duque 23, 1200-158 Lisboa, in the Bairro Alto neighbourhood. It sits in the transition area where Chiado, Bairro Alto and the Lower Town, or Baixa, meet. One overview presents it as a traditional venue for fado, wine and small plates rather than a commercialised tourist restaurant. It also calls the place a small, rustic tavern devoted to fado, the traditional musical genre of Portugal. The bar opens from Tuesday to Sunday, between 19:30 and 23:30, and is closed on Mondays. Its website says children are admitted only from the age of five. The telephone number listed there is +351 917 216 761. Reaching the bar means navigating steep, winding stairways and cobblestone alleyways on the border between Chiado and Bairro Alto, so it is worth leaving extra time. Do not confuse it with Restaurante Duque, another restaurant on the same street; the fado bar is at number 23. The drinks offering is a selection of wines and liqueurs from the regions of Portugal. The website also lists a variety of tapas. One overview describes the food as deliberately understated, with simple sharing plates such as cheeses, cured meats and olives, paired with regional Portuguese wines. The bar hosts traditional fado nights with fadistas who are friends of the house. According to one overview, friends, locals, resident musicians and visiting singers gather to share songs in a close-knit, living-room-style setting. A podcast about fado names Tiago Fins, Fernando Soares and Júlio Madaleno as musicians from Duque da Rua. The website directs guests to its Facebook page to confirm fado event times. Special events occasionally take place, such as guest singers, parties and promotions, and the bar encourages people to follow it on social media to hear about them early. Capacity is very limited, so securing a place in advance is advised. Having some euros on hand is also suggested, since small venues in Lisbon can sometimes have card terminal problems. Fado is a type of Portuguese music whose name translates as fate or destiny, and it has been compared to soul or blues. Its songs are often about longing or mourning, though some are happy and celebrate love or country. Two instruments matter in it: the Portuguese guitarra, a twelve-string guitar with a high-pitched sound, and the acoustic guitar. When the music starts, put your phone on silent, stop talking and listen; in Lisbon, applaud once the song ends.

Like the rest of the food here, the petiscos are completely Portuguese, and are served with bread. These petiscos are made in collaboration with the Restaurante Alfaia, so their offer is frequently changing. Oficina do DuqueOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · RestaurantsOficina do Duque is located in Lisbon’s Bairro Alto district at Calçada do Duque 43A, 1200-155 Lisboa. It opens at 17:30 every day. On Mondays to Thursdays and on Sundays it closes at 10:30pm, while on Fridays and Saturdays it closes at 11pm. You can view the menu, and make reservations, on their website. The ordinary can be extraordinary is the concept the restaurant’s kitchen employs. The restaurant accepts that each ingredient, from a lowly parsley to an expensive truffle, deserve the same respect, and are afforded the same dignity, when they are prepared to be presented on the plate. The kitchen staff aims to represent the true self, or nature, of each ingredient, and strives to maintain the essence of each of them. A dish can be defined by either clarity, or by depicting complexity. The restaurant is of the view that a meal can help one to perceive that the multifaceted nature of each of us can be in harmony. According to the restaurant’s personnel, the food at the establishment is as simple as it is surprising, and gives examples of a chocolate mousse with a salt stone, and a surprising sorbet. In their opinion, original and unexpected flavours can be found in even the simplest dishes. Here are some practical tips before your visit. Our restaurant is small, and the tables located on the outdoor terrace steps are very coveted. Therefore, table reservations, especially for dinner, are recommended and can be made on our webpage. Located on a steep calçada (stone steps), the entrance to our restaurant is not friendly for people with limited mobility nor for people with strollers and wheelchairs. With pedestrian focused streets, parking near our restaurant is very difficult. However, we recommend that you leave your car at a secure parking lot (like SABA Chiado), and walk up to our restaurant. We pride ourselves in having a friendly and welcoming staff, and we take our time to serve. Therefore, a long and leisurely dinner is recommended at our restaurant. Craft Snackery, the other project by Oficina, has a food truck located at 8Marvila. Open Thursday to Sunday from 12pm to 11pm, this food truck has Artisanal burgers. The food truck has dietary preference options.

Teatro Nacional D. Maria IIOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · Theatres & Opera HousesTeatro Nacional D. Maria II stands at Praça Dom Pedro IV, 1100-201 Lisboa, in the Rossio area at the centre of Lisbon. Visit Lisboa calls it one of the country's important theatres and says its imposing, cultural style gives distinction to one of the best known squares in the city. The same source describes the square as one of the most iconic in the country. A Google overview places the theatre in the heart of Lisbon, at Rossio Square, and presents it as one of the country's premier national theatres. Today it counts among the main Portuguese theatres, and it was classified as a national monument in 2012. The theatre first opened its doors in April 1846, during celebrations of the 27th anniversary of Queen Maria II, who lived from 1819 to 1853. That occasion is the main reason for its official name. Visit Lisboa adds that the queen was a passionate fan of theatre and gave the country's theatre companies a great deal of support. Almeida Garrett, counted among the important Portuguese playwrights and intellectuals, founded the theatre. In 1964 a raging fire destroyed the whole building except its external walls and main entrance. Visit Lisboa calls the blaze horrific, saying it razed the theatre. The building was totally reconstructed and reopened in 1978. The version standing today preserves the original neoclassical style. Visit Lisboa describes the rebuilding as taking place in the second half of the 20th century. As a national theatre, it is dedicated to classical and contemporary dramatic arts. It hosts national and international theatrical productions, artistic residencies and cultural outreach programmes. Visit Lisboa says the venue has staged national and international plays, and calls the plays demanding and excellent. Tiago Rodrigues has been Artistic Director since 2015. The theatre gives priority to opening itself to the community, attracting and training new audiences, and bringing cultural and artistic activities to all layers of the population in order to raise their aesthetic and critical standards. Visit Lisboa recommends a guided tour to see behind the scenes, including the changing rooms and the costume and prop workshops, among other areas. The venue also has a bookshop specialising in theatre and other show arts. Visit Lisboa lists the theatre under cultural centres and shows it as a Lisbon Tourism member. On that site, the Tripadvisor traveller rating is 4.2, based on 148 reviews. The theatre can be reached on +351 213250827 or at geral@tndm.pt, and its website is www.tndm.pt.
