    Sights & Landmarks
Dracaena draco L., commonly known as the dragon tree or dragon's blood tree, is a flowering plant species of the class Liliopsida, order Asparagales, which the APG IV system places in the subfamily Nolinoideae (formerly Dracaenaceae) of the family Asparagaceae. The species originates from the Atlantic biogeographic region of Macaronesia, where it is native to the Canary, Madeira and Azores archipelagos, occurring locally on the neighbouring African coast and in Cape Verde. It can live for hundreds of years, growing into large tree-like plants. Although common and much prized as an ornamental plant in the gardens of those archipelagos, the dragon tree is endangered in the wild due to the destruction of its habitat. Its abundance ranges from relatively common in the Canaries to rare on the island of Madeira and on most of the Azorean islands. It is the plant symbol of the island of Tenerife.
