Marquess of Pombal SquareLocated at Túnel do Marquês, 1269-133, Lisboa, Portugal, Marquess of Pombal Square (Praça do Marquês de Pombal) is in Lisbon's Arroios district. It sits at the end of Avenida da Liberdade and is next to Eduardo VII Park. Marquess of Pombal Square is often regarded as the starting point of Lisbon's central district. The roundabout has a radiating effect on the city, where a number of main streets such as Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo and Avenida Duque de Loulé fan out from the circle. Marquês de Pombal is the nearest Metro station to the square. The roundabout is named after Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, who is most famous for his governorship of Lisbon from 1750 to 1777 and for his work directing the rebuilding of the city after the 1755 earthquake. The statue is of Carvalho e Melo standing with a lion, a common symbol for strength and dominance. Surrounding the square are corporate and banking offices and 5 star hotels. The area is described as quiet, centrally located, and is a good area to find a place to stay. Located at the top of the square, Eduardo VII Park is the largest central park of Lisbon, and was formerly known as Liberty Park. Eduardo VII Park has great views of the Tagus river and the south bank. The park has many events such as the Lisbon book fair and seasonal festivals. Also in the park is the 25th of April memorial. The memorial was designed by the sculptor João Cutileiro. Another site to see is the Winter Wonderland, located in the park during the Christmas season. The greenhouses are Estufa Fria, Estufa Quente and Estufa Doce. A feature of the Square is the Marquês road tunnel which connects Avenida Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco in Amoreiras with Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo and Avenida António Augusto de Aguiar. The tunnel consists of two sections, the first being opened to the public in 2007 and the second in 2012. The speed limit is 50 km/h and there are 40 surveillance cameras. Building the tunnel required 150,000 cubic meters of excavation and the use of 2,000 piles. It is 1.6 km from the square to Rossio and Bairro Alto.ArroiosSquares, Streets & Bridges
