Opened in 2001, this museum is of great archaeological importance, preserving a significant number of silos – “bread pits” – from the medieval period. Since then, archaeological excavations in Almada's historic centre have been providing new data allowing a deeper understanding of its ancient urban layout. It was found that the “bread pits” have a wider distribution, appearing throughout the area of the old medieval town. These structures dug into the ground were a safe way to store cereals, thereby ensuring the subsistence of the population over long periods of time. Artefacts from the 13th to the 16th centuries have been recovered from inside them, bearing witness to the daily life of the communities of the time. It is part of the Museu de Almada and hosts the exhibition “Casas, covas e ruas: as raízes medievais de Almada”, which brings together the results of the most recent excavations.

An exhibition that combines botanical knowledge with cemetery symbolism to recover the key to reading 19th-century cemetery monuments, when the Language of Flowers was used to convey messages and emotions. Through the identification of the plants carved on gravestones — wreaths, floral decorations, coloured stained glass — it reveals the meanings of promises of eternal love, professions of faith, vows of fidelity and sighs of longing left by our ancestors.
