O TrevoOpens in a new tabChiado · RestaurantsO Trevo is a restaurant in the Chiado area of Lisbon, at Praça Luís de Camões 48, 1200-283 Lisboa. The venue's own website uses the name Cervejaria O Trevo and places it in Bairro Alto, which it calls a typical part of the city, while another description puts it on the border between Chiado and Bairro Alto. Culinary Backstreets, in an article by Francesca Savoldi published on March 21, 2022 under the title "O Trevo: Chicken Soup for the Portuguese Soul", describes it as a classic tasca in Chiado. A tasca is a traditional Portuguese snack bar or tavern, and this one is described as a plain, no-frills neighbourhood spot. It opens at 07:00 from Monday to Saturday. The venue's website gives 21:00 as the closing time, and another listing gives 22:30. Culinary Backstreets also lists Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 21:00. The telephone number on the website is 213 468 092. The bifana is the dish the sources single out: a sandwich of pork in a spiced, garlicky marinade. Anthony Bourdain featured O Trevo on his show No Reservations in 2012, stopping by as his final bite in Lisbon. He called the bifana a "magical dish", and the venue's website carries the quote "The magical dish called Bifana." Reviews on Tripadvisor and Yelp are said to describe the sandwich as juicy, intensely flavourful and cheap. Frequent visitors suggest adding plenty of mustard and piri-piri and pairing it with a cold Sagres beer. The place was already a local stop for a morning coffee, a cheap beer or a midday bite before that attention arrived. Its website speaks of Portuguese beer made to traditional recipes, and of a selection of snacks that go well with it, served alongside authentic Portuguese cuisine. It invites visitors to discover the flavour of tradition. The menu is described as short and traditional, built around classic Portuguese counter food. The setting is a bustling square, Praça Luís de Camões, and the mood is loud, fast-paced and unpretentious. Inside there are a few cramped tables, and outside on the square a handful of standing barrels or tables. Customers order at the counter from white-coated servers who handle orders quickly, and during the peak lunch rush it is standing room only. Some tourists mention queues and service that is gruff yet efficient, though the overall verdict in reviews is that it remains a cheap, authentic Lisbon experience.
Panda CantinaOpens in a new tabBaixa · RestaurantsPanda Cantina is a restaurant at Rua da Prata 252, 1100-052 Lisboa, in the historic Baixa district of Lisbon. It is listed in the restaurants category. It is a compact, casual eatery built around hearty Sichuan-inspired Chinese noodle soups, which people sometimes call Chinese ramen. The place is small and unpretentious, and it presents itself as a panda-themed noodle bar with a cozy atmosphere. Locals, expats and travellers alike are counted among those who eat there. The kitchen specialises in ramen that diners can customise. The menu is deliberately small, straightforward and easy to navigate, with a tight focus on hot, comforting noodle soup in deep, savoury broths. Soup is the star of the show here. The flavours are punchy and draw on Sichuan cooking. Inside, the look is playful and trendy, with bamboo accents, neon signage and panda decor, which makes the room a vibrant stop in the heart of downtown Lisbon. Lisbon's dining scene rests largely on traditional petiscos and seafood, but the city's appetite for diverse international cuisine grew sharply over the late 2010s. Panda Cantina opened in Baixa to serve quick, high-quality and affordable comfort food from Asia, with plenty of flavour. It gathered a loyal following and went on to add another location in Entrecampos. The Entrecampos branch means the name now appears in more than one part of the city, though the original remains the one on Rua da Prata. The restaurant opens every day of the week, with a midday service from 12:00 to 15:30 and an evening service from 18:30 to 22:00. Because the hours are the same every day, there is no weekly closing day to plan around. Table bookings are not accepted, so it runs strictly on a walk-in basis. Because the dining room is small and popular, queues form quickly, and arriving early in either service is the way to get a table without a long wait. Vegetarian and vegan diners have options, including crispy tofu, which is described as delicious. Traditional meat broths contain animal fats, however, so anyone who avoids meat should state clearly that they want a vegetarian or vegan broth base when ordering. As for paying, card and contactless mobile payments are widely accepted, although carrying a little cash is handy at a fast-paced casual spot like this one.

Quiosque Portas do SolOpens in a new tabAlfama · Cafés & Coffee ShopsQuiosque Portas do Sol is an open-air kiosk café standing on the Largo Portas do Sol, a belvedere square in the Alfama neighbourhood of Lisbon. Its address is Largo Portas do Sol, 1100-411 Lisboa. Time Out lists it among the coffee shops in the Castelo de São Jorge area, and a Google overview notes that the Castle of São Jorge is close by. Opening hours in the listing data run from 09:00 to 24:00, every day of the week, whereas Time Out's page gives daily 11am to 10pm. Time Out describes the kiosk as a good spot for watching the sunrise, the sunset and nearly everything that happens between the two. The menu it mentions includes sangria, beer, cocktails and bottles of water. Google's overview suggests going early in the morning for a quiet coffee with unobstructed sunrise views, or in the late afternoon for a golden-hour drink at sunset. It calls the sunset spectacular and adds that the surrounding terrace gets very packed as a result. Because of the prime location, the overview says, tables fill up fast. When no seat is free, it suggests doing what the locals do: order a drink to go at the counter and lean against the stone wall that looks out over the river. On payment, it says most Lisbon kiosks accept contactless cards and mobile payments, but a small amount of cash helps for quick service during peak rush hours. Quiosques in general are small huts found on many squares around Lisbon, serving drinks from draught beer and spirits to soft drinks and coffee, plus simple meals. One writer says that at the top of any steep Lisbon hill there is always a quiosque ready with freshly squeezed orange juice. Historic examples are described as small, ornate, octagonal pavilions surrounded by metal tables and chairs. The first refreshment kiosk, a Quiosque de Refresco, opened in Rossio Square in 1869. Kiosks declined in the mid-20th century under the dictatorship, when public gatherings were discouraged, and a preservation project in 2009 rescued these structures from decay. On coffee, the same writer says it costs only around €0.70 or €0.80 in a lot of places, and that sitting down to enjoy one, even for a couple of minutes, is very common in Portugal. Since the kiosk is in Alfama and near the castle, the Google overview recommends using it as a mid-walk break to recharge before wandering down the steep, winding medieval alleys.
Solar dos PresuntosOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · RestaurantsLocated at Rua das Portas de Santo Antão 150 in the Bairro Alto neighbourhood, Solar dos Presuntos is a short walk from Avenida da Liberdade and the Praça do Rossio. One reviewer wrote that it takes about five minutes to get there from Rossio. Solar dos Presuntos is open for lunch from 12:00 to 15:30 and for dinner from 19:00 to 23:00. The restaurant has been serving customers since 1974 and specializes in Minho cuisine. The Minho region is in northwestern Portugal. Hugo Araújo has been the executive chef since 2021. The building has three levels and is able to house 200 guests. One reviewer was able to get a table without a reservation. There is a mural by Vhils in the restaurant as well as a number of caricatures and photographs. Some of the photographs include the owner with different celebrities. On the occasion of one reviewer's lunch, an assortment of bread, butter, cheese, olives and cold cuts was delivered to the table. They ate the olives and left the rest. For their second course they ordered a lobster and prawn rice for €34.50. The dish was quite large and also good, according to the reviewer. The rice was al dente and the seafood was nicely cooked. For their main course they ordered roasted baby goat, which was also served with potatoes and rice. The reviewer said the meat was quite good and not gamey. However, it was a bit tough. For their lunch they spent €80 and thought the staff was quite good and friendly. Desserts are also offered. The area is quite small with low ceilings. The restaurant's multi-zone streaming system allows guests to listen to different music in the bar and dining room. Equipment is hidden. The restaurant is able to change music played through its licensed and/or royalty-free sources.

Teatro Nacional D. Maria IIOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · Theatres & Opera HousesTeatro Nacional D. Maria II stands at Praça Dom Pedro IV, 1100-201 Lisboa, in the Rossio area at the centre of Lisbon. Visit Lisboa calls it one of the country's important theatres and says its imposing, cultural style gives distinction to one of the best known squares in the city. The same source describes the square as one of the most iconic in the country. A Google overview places the theatre in the heart of Lisbon, at Rossio Square, and presents it as one of the country's premier national theatres. Today it counts among the main Portuguese theatres, and it was classified as a national monument in 2012. The theatre first opened its doors in April 1846, during celebrations of the 27th anniversary of Queen Maria II, who lived from 1819 to 1853. That occasion is the main reason for its official name. Visit Lisboa adds that the queen was a passionate fan of theatre and gave the country's theatre companies a great deal of support. Almeida Garrett, counted among the important Portuguese playwrights and intellectuals, founded the theatre. In 1964 a raging fire destroyed the whole building except its external walls and main entrance. Visit Lisboa calls the blaze horrific, saying it razed the theatre. The building was totally reconstructed and reopened in 1978. The version standing today preserves the original neoclassical style. Visit Lisboa describes the rebuilding as taking place in the second half of the 20th century. As a national theatre, it is dedicated to classical and contemporary dramatic arts. It hosts national and international theatrical productions, artistic residencies and cultural outreach programmes. Visit Lisboa says the venue has staged national and international plays, and calls the plays demanding and excellent. Tiago Rodrigues has been Artistic Director since 2015. The theatre gives priority to opening itself to the community, attracting and training new audiences, and bringing cultural and artistic activities to all layers of the population in order to raise their aesthetic and critical standards. Visit Lisboa recommends a guided tour to see behind the scenes, including the changing rooms and the costume and prop workshops, among other areas. The venue also has a bookshop specialising in theatre and other show arts. Visit Lisboa lists the theatre under cultural centres and shows it as a Lisbon Tourism member. On that site, the Tripadvisor traveller rating is 4.2, based on 148 reviews. The theatre can be reached on +351 213250827 or at geral@tndm.pt, and its website is www.tndm.pt.
