He was the architect and decorator of the space, which is meant to give diners a seat at the table of a traditional family home in Nepal. Some dishes follow secret recipes from his mother and grandmother. The ingredients combine Nepali tradition with Portuguese territory: certified Transmontano goat, wild boar from Évora, wild asparagus, boletus and chestnuts. Other inspirations include a steamed wheat pastry, goat offal, fermented leafy greens, handmade samosas and momos. The teas come from the Ilam region. The menu shows this range. Momo ra chatani is a steamed wheat pastry filled with black pork and free-range chicken. Bakhra ko maasu ko jhol ra yarchagumba is a goat soup cooked slowly for several hours with grated Yarchagumba. Mú Gelato ItalianoOpens in a new tabIntendente · Ice Cream & Dessert ShopsMú Gelato Italiano is an ice cream shop in Lisbon's Intendente neighbourhood, at Campo Mártires da Pátria 50, 1150-225 Lisboa. It stands next to the hilltop garden, and it describes itself as a traditional laboratory making authentic Italian gelato. The shop opens every day of the week, from 12:30 to 20:00. Everything here is made by hand, using genuine ingredients, plenty of seasonal fruit and less sugar. The gelato is pasteurised and churned in front of customers every day, and the shop says it has nothing to hide. The workshop is in view inside the main shop, and the team follows the traditional Italian method. Their recipes rely on local fruit, fresh cream and only a little sugar. The ingredients come from local producers, and the gelato contains no preservatives, colourings, chemical flavourings or industrial pastes. There is a vegan gelato too, with no added sugar. The shop sums up its approach by saying its only trick is having no tricks. The brand holds that real happiness is healthy and sustainable, and that it can be tasted on a spoon. Its stated aim is to bring together pleasure, personal health and the wellbeing of the planet. Its identity is summed up as Italian tradition, inspiration and sustainability. The founder, Marco Bauli, was born in the Verona region of Italy and grew up in a family of pastry makers, surrounded by flour, sugar and sweets and by stories of recipes handed down through generations. He studied industrial design and spent several years working in communication and marketing before other adventures called. With his partner, Elena, he set out travelling. Their love of the sea brought them to Portugal, and their love of simple, genuine things made them stay. After studying the art of traditional gelato with masters of the Italian school, he opened the first Mú shop in Lisbon in 2013, at Campo dos Mártires de Pátria. He saw it as an artisanal laboratory where he could pursue a passion that was also a mission: a gelato that was not only good but also healthy and conscious. The name Mú is explained as more than the sound a cow makes. The brand presents it as a legendary, lost continent, an imaginary and unexplored territory from which humanity is thought to have descended. It also describes itself as a love story between Italian gelato tradition and the genuine quality of Portuguese products.
Quiosque Ribeira das NausOpens in a new tabCais do Sodré · Cafés & Coffee ShopsQuiosque Ribeira das Naus is a kiosk with a terrace in Lisbon, standing on the bank of the Tagus River, which the Portuguese call the Tejo. It sits at Avenida Ribeira das Naus 5, 1200-000 Lisboa, in the Cais do Sodré neighbourhood, and it opens every day from 11:00 to 23:00. The avenue links Cais do Sodré with Praça do Comércio, and the kiosk stands in the middle of it. The terrace has tables, and sun loungers are available for anyone who would rather sunbathe or read a book. The kiosk serves light meals and drinks. For lunch there are pizzas and sandwiches, and dinner menus are mentioned too. Lemonade and sangria are suggested to go with the food. The atmosphere is relaxed, and Portuguese mixes with many other languages, because the view draws tourists and locals alike. The river is the main scenery, and the spot is described as a good choice for watching the sunset in the evening. The Ribeira das Naus stretch measures about a thousand metres, with a pedestrian corridor beside the river and two artificial lakes, and cars circulate between them. After decades as a road, the area was rehabilitated as public space, returning the river to pedestrians. People run there, families stroll at weekends, and visitors have a drink at the end of the day. A large sloping lawn suits resting or picnics, and a stone staircase inspired by old ship launch ramps pays tribute to the site's naval past. Swimming in the Tagus is prohibited because of currents and maritime traffic, although you can dip your feet. The name comes from the naus, the ships that were built and maintained on this spot, which served as a shipyard. Many ships of the Portuguese navigators were built along this riverside. The location was chosen for its closeness to the new Ribeira palace, built in 1498 in the Terreiro do Paço. In the eighteenth century the Royal Navy Arsenal occupied the area, and it stayed until 1938. The 1755 earthquake destroyed the place completely, and it was rebuilt as part of the Baixa Pombalina plan. Its history now spans more than 400 years. Along the avenue, other terraces and kiosks also offer drinks and snacks, and a traditional ginjinha or a pastel de nata is suggested. Late afternoon is recommended for the sunset light, a blanket or towel suits the lawn, and the riverside path leads on to Belém.
Taberna Sal GrossoOpens in a new tabAlfama · RestaurantsTaberna Sal Grosso is a small restaurant at Calçada do Forte 22, 1100-256 Lisboa, in the Alfama neighbourhood, next to Santa Apolónia station. It is open every day of the week, from 12:30 to 16:00 for lunch and again from 19:00 to 23:00 in the evening. The room holds 27 seats, and the kitchen serves Portuguese food. Because of the limited space, it is the only restaurant in its group that does not accept pets. The décor is rustic, and the menu is written on a slate wall. The owners describe the place as combining the feel of a traditional tavern with a contemporary touch. Dishes are meant to be shared, so the relaxed atmosphere suits a meal with friends or family. One guide suggests ordering two to three items per person, beginning with lighter petiscos before moving on to heavier meat or fish dishes. The tavern opened in 2015 under Joaquim Saragga, its chef and owner. Saragga lost a job and decided to change course in life. As a student in London, Saragga cooked for roommates and remembered feeling happy in the kitchen, so culinary school followed, then a Masters in gastronomy. Saragga told one visiting writer the aim was not to innovate but to serve favourite traditional recipes made with local, seasonal ingredients, cooking what the chef likes to eat. Prices are described as modest. The tavern charges no couvert, offers only two house wines, which are described as very drinkable, plus a few artisanal beers, and keeps desserts modestly priced. At lunch, writers from Salt of Portugal tried a watercress and orange salad, codfish cakes, manta ray and garlic, oxtail with quince, and codfish and chickpeas, and called everything perfect. Since July 2021 the restaurant has been run by a new team, which took over the Alfama project after it had been closed since COVID, acquired the concept and brand, and reopened it in a renovated space. The group now has three restaurants: this one, another in São Bento in Lisbon, and one in Évora, in the Alentejo region. Booking is advised. Writers from Salt of Portugal found a group gathered at the door trying to get a table, and they made a reservation for lunch two days later. Reservations can be made through the official website, tabernasalgrosso.pt, or by calling 910 137 713, a national mobile number. The approach on foot from Santa Apolónia station is a steep cobbled climb up the calçada to number 22.

Landeau ChocolateOpens in a new tabAlcântara · Cafés & Coffee ShopsLandeau Chocolate is a small café in Lisbon's Alcântara neighbourhood. Its address is Rua Rodrigues Faria 103, 1300-501 Lisboa, inside the LX Factory complex. The place is built around one dessert, a chocolate cake, instead of a long list of pastries and sweets. Visitors describe a café that concentrates almost entirely on that single item, and the cake is the reason people go out of their way to find it. The venue is linked to pastry chef Sofia Landeau, who is said to have devoted herself to perfecting one cake recipe. The concept is minimalist, and the menu is intentionally tiny. The cake is made of several layers. Its interior is dense, fudgy and mousse-like, and the top carries a light dusting of bitter cocoa powder. To go with a slice, you can order espresso, tea or hot chocolate. The cake became popular through word of mouth, social media and travellers who kept talking about it after their visit. Many people call it the best chocolate cake in the world. One travel blogger, writing in March 2026 after a second trip to Lisbon, went in to test that reputation. They also noted that, despite the popularity, the room feels calm and welcoming rather than overly commercial. The café opens at 12:00 every day. From Monday to Saturday it stays open until 22:00, while on Sundays it closes at 20:00. The LX Factory branch can get busy, especially at weekends, and the advice is to skip peak weekend afternoons if you dislike queues. A weekday makes it easier to find a table. If every seat is taken, you can order a slice to go and eat it while walking around the courtyards. Landeau has other locations in Lisbon: Chiado, Campo de Ourique, and inside El Corte Inglés. The Chiado branch is described as more central and easier to reach while exploring the city, and it may suit anyone who wants a quieter visit than the LX Factory spot allows. The LX Factory area is worth time in its own right. It used to be an industrial zone and has been transformed into one of Lisbon's most creative districts. Within walking distance you will find bookstores, street art, boutiques, restaurants and cafés. The complex includes the Livraria Ler Devagar bookstore as well as local design shops, so a visit to the cake can easily turn into an afternoon spent wandering the industrial courtyards.
Museu Calouste GulbenkianOpens in a new tabAvenidas Novas · MuseumsThe Museu Calouste Gulbenkian stands at Avenida de Berna 45A, 1067-001 Lisboa, in the Avenidas Novas neighbourhood. It opens from Wednesday to Monday, between 10:00 and 18:00. Sources describe it as a calm cultural refuge set in the heart of Lisbon, away from the busy tourist areas of Belém and the Baixa, and many regard it as among Europe's finest private art museums. The institution occupies a garden campus of 7.5 hectares and rests on two cultural pillars. The first is the Founder's Collection, shown in the main museum building. It draws on the personal collection assembled by Gulbenkian, and roughly 1,000 to 2,000 pieces are on display at any one time. Rather than sorting works by medium, the galleries follow chronology and geography, so a visit moves through thousands of years of human creativity. Gulbenkian's collection is described as eclectic and meticulously curated, and the display is arranged so that a visitor can walk through it without a break between eras. The material falls into several areas. Egyptian, Greco-Roman and Mesopotamian art brings together mummy masks, ancient coins, Roman medallions and ancient glassware. Islamic art includes Persian carpets, Iznik ceramics and mosque lamps dating from the 12th to the 18th centuries. European art runs from the Renaissance through the Impressionists, with works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Manet, Degas and Renoir. A dedicated room presents jewellery, glass art and tiaras by René Lalique, an Art Nouveau master. The Persian carpets are called exquisite, the Roman medallions stunning, and the Lalique room jaw-dropping. The second pillar is the Modern Art Centre, known as CAM, which sits in a separate building on the same grounds. It concentrates on twentieth-century and contemporary Portuguese art and is described as holding the largest collection of that kind. Alongside it, the centre hosts major international temporary exhibitions and rotating installations of sound, video and design. It stands apart from the main museum building yet shares its garden setting. Descriptions of the museum stress its human scale. It is called intimately scaled, brilliantly lit and peaceful, in contrast to cavernous national museums that can induce museum fatigue. The same sources say the 5,000 years of art can be viewed in a fluid journey without that fatigue. In short, the museum combines a lush garden campus with two collections under separate roofs, one of historic range and one of recent Portuguese art.
O JacintoOpens in a new tabLisbon · RestaurantsO Jacinto is a restaurant in Lisbon at Avenida Ventura Terra 2, 1600-781 Lisboa. It sits in the old part of Telheiras, right beside the Segunda Circular, in a villa that is easy to walk past without noticing. The building was originally meant as a home and has been upgraded step by step since the restaurant opened in 1971. Time Out gives directions: leave the Segunda Circular at the sign reading "Restaurante" just after the Estádio de Alvalade, and about 50 metres further you reach a quiet square surrounded by old villas. The restaurant describes its cooking as typical Portuguese food, made the way a grandmother would have made it. The critic Fernando Melo adds that it follows traditional lines with some modern touches. Teresa and São work the stoves, Júlio Oliveira is head of the dining room, and Roberto, Sr. Zé and Rui wait tables. The wine list holds about 300 still wines, along with some port, Madeira, late harvest wines and champagnes. Among the starters, Melo points to a plate of ham, Serra da Estrela cheese and sliced chouriço, as well as hake roe and garlic prawns. Time Out mentions half a dozen small salads, from pig's ear to octopus, plus gratinated goat cheese with honey, sautéed mushrooms with ham and fried alheira. Fish dishes include grilled sea bass, gilt-head bream, grouper and turbot, a salt cod açorda with green asparagus, bacalhau à minhota, fried small horse mackerel with bean rice, a sea bass cataplana with seafood, a cherne and seafood massada, prawn curry with basmati rice and oven-roasted octopus. Lamprey rice from the Minho appears in season. On the meat side, Melo lists cabidela rice with free-range chicken, cozido à portuguesa, fried iscas with sautéed potatoes, veal jardineira, bísaro suckling pig in the Bairrada style, ossobuco with potatoes and esparregado, and fried game alheira with a fried egg. Time Out adds stewed veal cheeks and a section of three steaks, one of them picanha. Desserts include lemon meringue tart, chocolate petit gateau and chocolate mousse. The restaurant is open Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 15:00 and 19:30 to 22:00, and on Saturday from 12:00 to 15:00. It is closed on Sunday. Melo gives an average price of 34 euros, while Time Out places it between 30 and 40 euros. Its review, written by Alfredo Lacerda and dated 11 January 2023, gave three stars out of five and called the service friendly though not especially quick. The phone number is 217 581 728 and the website is jacintolisboa.com.
Organi ChiadoOpens in a new tabChiado · RestaurantsOrgani Chiado is a vegan restaurant at Calçada Nova de São Francisco 2, 1200-300 Lisboa, in the Chiado neighbourhood. It opened in December 2016 with the aim of being a place of harmony for everyone and among everyone: the team, animals, the environment, the planet and people's own health. The restaurant's website says that in 2018 and 2019 it was regarded as Lisbon's best vegan and vegetarian restaurant. The kitchen uses no animal ingredients, so the food suits both vegans and vegetarians. The main menu is built on products that come straight from nature, yet the restaurant says its commitment is to be embracing rather than restrictive. Ingredients are local and seasonal, organic and of high quality, and as far as possible Portuguese. A Google overview adds that the philosophy avoids heavily processed meat substitutes and favours wholesome, natural ingredients from sustainable local producers. The restaurant says it values its relationships with producers, product quality and respect for the environment, and it prefers safe, sustainable farming methods. Every dish and dessert is made without sugar. Menus change daily, following the season, so the team can work with fresh produce. The concept fits macrobiotic eating, and the restaurant says it wants to offer refined, high-quality options to everybody, not only to the typical vegetarian. Its stated motivation goes beyond business: it wants to show the art of cooking with excellence, and to prove that a full gastronomic experience, with flavour and satisfaction, is possible without any ingredient of animal origin. It speaks of stimulating the senses through flavours, smells and textures. The restaurant sits on the "little steps" of Calçada Nova de São Francisco. A terrace on the historic stairs gives it a very Lisbon setting. Inside there is a room in a building of typical construction, and a private terrace where group dinners are usually held. Lunch is served every day from 12:00 to 16:00. Dinner is listed from 19:00 to 23:00 on Monday to Wednesday, and from 19:00 to midnight on Thursday to Saturday. The website shows a rating of 4.7 based on 1793 reviews. Reviewers mention a pumpkin dish, a walnut pie, cashew mozzarella and penne rigate. One reviewer found the sangria pricier than expected, and another suggested booking a table because the place can get busy.
Time Out Market LisboaOpens in a new tabCais do Sodré · Street Food & Food HallsTime Out Market Lisboa stands at Avenida 24 de Julho, 49 (Praça Dom Luís I), 1200-148 Lisboa, in the Cais do Sodré neighbourhood. It occupies part of the Mercado da Ribeira, a nineteenth-century building with an iron-and-glass roof, and it opens every day from 10:00 until midnight. The team at Time Out Portugal created it, and it opened in 2014 as the original Time Out Market. The operators call it the world's first gastronomic and cultural market, and one description adds that journalists curate it. The building is older than the food hall. The Mercado da Ribeira opened on 1 January 1882 as the Mercado da Ribeira Nova, to a design by engineer Frederico Ressano Garcia. Its iron frame was arranged around a central corridor with running water, which let fish and produce stay cool instead of sitting in open air. A fire destroyed the eastern section on 7 June 1893. In 1926 Lisbon City Council demolished the damaged structure and commissioned architect João Piloto to design a replacement, which reopened in 1930. That version has a large central dome, tiled outside and painted inside, ceramic entrance panels showing maritime scenes by Jorge Colaço, and frescoes of fruit and vegetables by Gabriel Constanti. The dome looked unusual above a produce market, so locals nicknamed the building Mesquita do Nabo, meaning the Turnip Mosque. Time Out got its space through a municipal concession. In October 2010 Lisbon City Council offered part of the building on a 20-year concession, covering roughly 5,000 m², which meant half of the ground floor and all of the first floor. Time Out Lisboa was the only bidder. It proposed inviting restaurants and chefs it had recommended in its reviews to run permanent stalls. The other half of the building still works as a municipal market with fish, fruit and vegetable stalls. Inside the market hall are 26 restaurants, 8 bars, a dozen shops, an events venue and a cooking academy. Named eateries include Libertà Pasta Bar, Marisqueira Azul, Duro de Matar, Pinóquio, Monte Mar and Café de São Bento. Henrique Sá Pessoa, who holds two stars at his restaurant Alma, runs Stall 13, where he sells slow-cooked suckling pig, and Marlene Vieira runs Stall 12, with roasted octopus and duck rice. Croqueteria offers a cuttlefish ink croquette and an alheira croquette, and Super Bock beer is poured at the central drink stalls. The Time Out Academy, equipped with support from Teka, seats 22 and hosts workshops, courses and show cooking.
