Elevador da GlóriaBairro Alto · Monuments & Historic BuildingsThe Elevador da Glória, also known as the Glória Funicular, runs between Calçada da Glória, 35, 1250-174 Lisboa, and the Bairro Alto. It begins in the downtown valley around the Praça dos Restauradores and ends beside the Jardim e Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. The funicular has operated since 24 October 1885 and is a popular means of transport for the public, both local and visiting, day and night. The design of the funicular was undertaken by the French engineer, Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. Initially, it operated a water counterweight system, which is similar to that still in operation on the Bom Jesus Elevator in Braga. Later, it changed to steam and, ultimately, to electricity. It has been powered by electricity since that time. Inside illumination was provided by candles up until the end of the 19th century. Each carriage had two levels. According to the Lisbon City Council, the funicular has approximately three million annual users. Calçada da Glória once hosted a steep hill climb. From 1913 to 1926, what is sometimes called “the smallest bicycle race in the world,” the Subida à Glória, was held over the 275m long, 17% gradient section of the hill. It was reinstated in 2013, but has not been held since 22 September 2018. O Elevador da Glória is an album and song by the Portuguese band Rádio Macau, released in 1987 and dedicated to the city. In 2022, the funicular was declared a National Monument of Portugal. On 3 September 2025, the funicular crashed into a building, at a speed of 37 mph. The crash killed 16 and injured 20. Time Out reported that the accident funicular closed for the duration of the investigation.
Elevador de Santa JustaChiado · Sights & LandmarksThis vertical street connection is known as the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Santa Justa Lift. It is a tower with neo-Gothic architecture made of iron and a height of 45 to 47 meters, located at Rua de Santa Justa, 1200-093, Lisboa, Portugal. The Lift is composed of an iron framework with two wooden and brass framed cabins. One of the blog writers mentions that these cabins help transport twenty people at a time and take 15 seconds to travel to the top of the Lift. The Lift is open with hours varying from 7 am to 11 pm in the summer and 7:30 am to 8:30 pm in the winter. The cost of a ticket to ride the Lift is €5.30. The price of the ticket is covered by the Lisboa Card, and a 24 hour Viva Viagem card transport ticket helps cover the cost of the Lift. The author mentions that during the off season the line to take the Lift was extremely long and to check official websites as information may be out of date. Visitors who do not want to wait in line can walk up to the top. Take photos of the lift from the street, walk up the steps and follow Rua do Carmo. Take your first right on Rua Garrett and immediately after take Calçada do Sacramento which leads to Largo do Carmo. Take the trail on the right that goes by the ruins of the Carmo Convent. The trail ends at Bellalisa Elevador. There are stairs that lead to the lift. The bridge that connects to the top of the lift is free. The bridge and area around the lifts have great views of the city. From the top there is a view of the Carmo convent and ruins, Castelo de São Jorge, Rossio Square, Lisbon cathedral and other views listed on the blog.
Elevador do LavraMouraria · Sights & LandmarksSituated in the Mouraria district of Lisbon, Elevador do Lavra (also known as Ascensor do Lavra and Lavra Funicular) is a funicular railway that is a point of interest in the city. Be sure to double check the status of the funicular before making the trip, as it can be suspended for inspection. This line was the first to open in 1884. On February 19, 2002, the Portuguese government declared the funicular a national monument, assigning it the reference number IPA.00003040. Covering a distance of 188 meters and having an average grade of 22.9 percent, the Elevador do Lavra has two stops and a track gauge of 900 mm. Each of the funicular cars are powered by 600 V DC. Like the Ascensor da Glória, both utilise a similar system of a base steel carriage with a wooden structure with two long benches attached to steel walls that are walled with glass. Both vehicles have a yellow and white exterior. The lower section of the tracks are interleaved. The two vehicles are connected in such a way that when one climbs the other descends. The descending vehicle serves as a counterweight to the ascending vehicle and helps draw the ascending vehicle up. The Lavra started off as a water balanced funicular. After a year it converted to steam power. The steam powerhouse was built at the top of Calçada do Lavra. In 1915, it was converted to electric power. Alongside the Ascensores da Bica and da Glória, the Lavra is also listed on the Wikipedia page of tourist attractions and landmarks of Lisbon.
