    Ermida de São Sebastião
Montijo · Churches & Religious Sites
The Ermida de S. Sebastião, today part of the built heritage of the city of Montijo, dates back to the 14th century; it was in the late 15th century that its documented history took on a link, lasting to the present day, with the identity of this modern municipality, part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and the Setúbal peninsula. It served as the seat of the parish from the time of parochial autonomy; 1512, 1525, 1534 and 1609 - Friars of the Order of S. Tiago visited the chapel in 1609. At that time the friars ordered a painted altarpiece to be made for the high altar and gave instructions for the removal of the transverse altars, as these were not in a fit state for further repairs. In the second half of the 18th century, restoration work was carried out. In 1982 a wooden image of S. Sebastião was stolen. Although in 1990 the Montijo Municipal Council applied to IPPAR for the building to be classified as a property of public interest, its request was refused, as the building was not considered sufficiently important.
