Fonte Monumental da AlamedaOpens in a new tabLisbon · Sights & LandmarksFonte Monumental da Alameda is a fountain in Lisbon, Portugal, located in Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques, s/n, 1900-179. Built in the mid 20th century, the fountain is located at the eastern end of the park, Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques. Locally, the fountain is known as Fonte Luminosa. The Trienal de Arquitectura de Lisboa (Lisbon Architecture Triennale) includes it in their classification of infrastructure. There were two reasons for the construction of the fountain: the first was to celebrate the introduction of a regular water supply to the eastern part of Lisbon; the second was to commemorate the triple centennial of the restoration and the foundation of Portugal. The fountain consists of a semi-circular lake with figures emerging from it. There are thirteen water spouts, and the water cascades through three water dischargers. The fountain incorporates numerous sculptural and architectural elements. Triton, riding a horse, accompanied by Mermaids, is the principal sculpture. There are other sculptural elements created by a number of sculptors. The fountain is designed to link different areas of the city. It closes off one end of the promenade. The lots to the south and the multi-family buildings along Avenida Almirante Reis, which date back to the first half of the 20th century, are located south of the fountain. To the north of the fountain and along Avenida de Roma are the more modern districts of Lisbon and Alvalade which were developed in the second half of the 20th century. The fountain structurally adjusts and integrates the area to the East and the remaining part of the city beyond the point where it stands. Visitors enter the machinery galleries to see the inner workings of the systems. Photography is permitted. The Trienal states that the subway stop is Alameda. Buses 708, 717, 735 and 797 are recommended.
