MAAT - A Fábrica da EletricidadeLisbon · MuseumsMAAT – A Fábrica da Eletricidade is the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology, at Passeio Carlos do Carmo s/n, 1300-999 Lisboa, beside the Tagus River in Lisbon's Belém district. It operates as a cross-disciplinary cultural hub focused on contemporary art, thought, architecture and science, and it joins industrial heritage with contemporary design. The complex has two main architectural spaces. One is the historic Central Tejo power station, known as MAAT Central and as A Fábrica da Eletricidade. The other is an undulating, low-rise gallery building with a wave-like look on the riverfront. A landscaped rooftop garden overlooking the water links them. The museum is not huge, but the visit works better when both buildings are treated as one. The roof terrace is one of the main reasons people come. It serves as a public plaza as much as a museum feature, with broad views over the Tagus, Belém Tower and the 25 de Abril Bridge, and it lets visitors take in river, railway, power station and gallery in one sweep. It is reached by climbing the exterior ramping paths of the MAAT building. Inside the power station, the preserved turbine hall keeps its original machinery, scale and structure, and it feels almost cathedral-like. The turbine hall and the MAAT Garden are easy to shortchange, yet they add industrial-history context and quieter river views. MAAT opens Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, from 11am to 7pm. Standard entry starts from €11, and one ticket for MAAT Gallery and MAAT Central covers current exhibitions across both spaces. Booking close to the visit is often possible, but weekends, school holidays and headline temporary exhibitions are the times to reserve ahead. Wednesday or Thursday from 11am to 1pm is noticeably calmer than weekend late afternoons, because the rooftop starts filling up for sunset and foot traffic builds in Belém after lunch. Most visitors need 1.5 to 2 hours, rising to 2.5 to 3 hours for both buildings, the roof and the temporary exhibitions. A highlights-only route of the gallery exterior, roof terrace and main exhibition hall takes 1 to 1.5 hours and covers about 1 km. A balanced route through the Electricity Factory, main turbine hall, gallery, roof terrace and garden takes 1.5 to 2 hours and covers about 1.8 km. A full exploration adds the interactive energy galleries and a café break, taking 2.5 to 3 hours over about 2.5 km. A guide suits those who care about architecture or energy history.
