Parque da Bela VistaOpens in a new tabLisbon · Parks & GardensParque da Bela Vista is a green space in the Marvila and Bela Vista area on the eastern side of Lisbon, running alongside Avenida Almirante Gago Coutinho. It covers roughly 85 hectares and counts among the largest green spaces in the city. The park combines a rugged, semi-rural look with the amenities of a modern urban park. The grounds were once a farm, and its rural character has been preserved. Wooded zones sit beside broad open areas that used to be fields of cereal crops. There are wide tree-lined avenues, rolling lawns, and clusters of Mediterranean pines and olive trees. Fauna and flora typical of Portugal are found here, with a particularly wide variety of birds. Elevated points offer sweeping views across the city skyline and toward the Tagus River, and the park also has a viewpoint. Other facilities include a sports area, a picnic park and a traffic school. The park is a designated municipal climate refuge, meant to help cool the eastern quarters of the city during high summer temperatures. On ordinary weekdays it is quiet and airy, with locals walking dogs, jogging or picnicking under the trees, far removed from the dense historic centre. Music festivals change that picture completely, turning the park into a high-energy entertainment hub. Rock in Rio used the park until 2023. Its City of Rock opened here for the first time in May 2004, and more than 380,000 people came over 6 days, with 70 attractions and more than 120 hours of entertainment. The 2006 edition drew 350,000 people over 5 days, and its social project raised 553,000 euros for Sic Esperança. In 2008 the festival was organised in two locations, Lisbon and Madrid, and at the park the Sunset Stage replaced the Hot Stage; Amy Winehouse performed and Joss Stone made a debut. The 2010 edition hosted Bon Jovi, Rage Against The Machine, Motörhead, John Mayer, Cypress Hill and Rihanna. In 2012 the park hosted the festival for the fifth time, and more than 350,000 people attended over five days. On the day Smashing Pumpkins, Linkin Park, The Offspring and Limp Bizkit played the World Stage, 84,000 people visited. Madonna performed on 14 September 2008 for about 75 thousand people, and Justin Timberlake played on 1 June 2014 to 80 thousand visitors. Miley Cyrus holds the audience record, with more than 93 thousand people on 29 May 2010. From 2024 the festival moved to Parque do Tejo e do Trancão.
