Zé dos BoisOpens in a new tabBairro Alto · Theatres, Cinemas & Music VenuesLocated at Rua da Barroca 59, 1200-049 Lisboa in Lisbon’s Bairro Alto district, Zé dos Bois, known as ZDB, is a former palace built in the 18th century, which now houses an arts center. Set up by a civic group in 1994, ZDB started as an association that was created to provide an opportunity and space for the arts outside of the commercial and institutional frame of that period. ZDB is a multipurpose center for the promotion and production of contemporary arts. It also provides a space and opportunity for research by artists involved in the performing arts and cinema. It also organizes exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and concerts. ZDB also organizes and hosts international and national arts residencies. It focuses on cultivating and strengthening relationships with artists to help facilitate the creation of new work. The spirit that guided its creation, cooperation and a public service attitude, is still strongly instilled in the organization. It focuses on new audiences. The Arts programme provides artists with facilities and opportunities to exhibit their work. Each exhibition is accompanied by educational activities including film cycles, debates, guided tours and workshops, provided by the Educational Department. The performative arts, within Negócio, comprises production and presentation of more than 30 artistic works and residencies. The team is involved with the entire process of artistic creation, and production of the works. The team also assists with the communication and distribution of the works. ZDB also provides support to independent creators and a number of partner organisations. Activities related to music come under the scope of ZDBmüzique. The scope aims to provide opportunities to artists that experiment and break boundaries of various musical languages and genres including pop, rock, noise and jazz. It also provides opportunities to artists in the fields of electro-acoustic and improvised music, and helps with the production and distribution of musical works. Regular activities are conducted from 18:00 to 02:00 from Monday to Thursday, 18:00 to 03:00 on Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Sunday. The team is also available to conduct educational visits to exhibition halls.
