Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian (CAM)The Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, known as CAM, is the Gulbenkian Foundation's modern art centre, found at Rua Marquês de Fronteira 2, 1070-295 Lisboa, in the Avenidas Novas area. It opened in 1983. Its holdings of Portuguese modern and contemporary art include Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Almada Negreiros and Paula Rego, and they are shown in dialogue with international artists. The collection totals almost 12,000 works: paintings, sculptures, installations, drawings, prints, photographs and videos or films. CAM reopened in September 2024 after a renovation by Kengo Kuma and Associates, with landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic. The original concrete building was conceived by British architect Sir Leslie Martin. Kuma took inspiration from the engawa, an element of traditional Japanese architecture that joins interior and exterior. He opened the building up to the south and added a canopy 100 metres long with a ceramic roof, which links the galleries to the extended garden. CAM stands at the point where the Foundation's gardens meet the city. Rotating collection displays share the building with temporary exhibitions, a drawing room, a project space and a visitable open storage. Scheherazade, the Never-ending Collection of CAM, presents the collection in fourteen thematic chapters, told like the Thousand and One Nights, with works drawn from 12,000 pieces. Temporary shows include The Exhibition of a Dream, curated by Mathieu Copeland, in which sixteen dreams become songs played along evolving mandalas in the Engawa Space, without screens, from 19 September to 22 February 2027. Inês Zenha's Murky Waters, free to enter, fills the Project Space with water, clay and bodily fluids, from 19 September to 8 February 2027. A mesa do CAM, or CAM's Table, is the on-site restaurant, led by André Magalhães. Its menu centres on seasonal produce and close work with local suppliers, and its name refers to a central table designed by Kuma with a modular form. The Museu Calouste Gulbenkian is a two-minute walk away. CAM is open 10:00 to 18:00 on Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, with Saturday running to 21:00. It is closed on Tuesdays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, and 24 and 25 December. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The CAM ticket, covering the collection and temporary exhibitions, costs €12. Temporary exhibitions alone cost €8, and an All Inclusive ticket with the Gulbenkian Museum costs €18. Entry is free on Sundays from 14:00 and for under-18s, with 25% off for under-30s and 10% off for over-65s. The nearest metro stations are São Sebastião (Blue and Red lines) and Praça de Espanha (Blue line).Avenidas NovasMuseums
