Largo do ChiadoLargo do Chiado is a public square in the Chiado district of Lisbon, Portugal. It is located at Largo do Chiado 4 a 7, 1200-108 Lisboa. Historically, the square has been at the border of the commercial district, Baixa, and the district of the same name situated on the hill above. The listing says the square is open daily from 8am to 2am. Baixa is situated below Chiado and Bairro Alto is situated above it. Largo do Chiado is home to two churches. On the north side is Igreja Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, which was built in 1708. On the south side is Igreja Nossa Senhora do Loreto, which was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. The square is home to a statue of Francisco de Sá de Miranda. The name Chiado is said to come from the satirical 16th century Portuguese poet, António Ribeiro, who was also known as, "o Chiado." It is said that he died in 1591, in Lisbon. He was said to be very witty and had the ability to imitate other people very well. A Brasileira, at Rua Garrett 120, opened in 1905 to market Brazilian Coffee. It was a hub for Portugal’s Modernist writers and poets, including Fernando Pessoa. A bronze statue of Pessoa was placed outside the café in 1988. 1988 was also the year of the Chiado Fire. The fire destroyed or severely damaged 18 buildings on August 25. The restoration kept the Pombaline street plan and introduced interior spaces. The restoration took over 10 years to complete. Today, the buildings at Largo do Chiado 4 a 7 house a McDonald’s. Recommended by some travel guides, the Chiado is a good spot early in the day, before the crowds gather. Rua Garrett leads to Livraria Bertrand. The Bertrand bookstore was founded in 1732 and is the oldest bookstore in Portugal. The Baixa-Chiado Metro station services both the blue and the green lines. The square is also on Tram 28’s route.ChiadoSquares, Streets & Bridges
