Miradouro de Santa LuziaOpens in a new tabAlfama · Viewpoints & Photo SpotsMiradouro de Santa Luzia stands at Largo de Santa Luzia, 1100-487 Lisboa, in the Alfama district. Alfama is one of the oldest parts of Lisbon, with narrow streets, stairways, small squares and old houses. The viewpoint is set into the walls of the old Moorish city bounds. Visiting costs nothing. It is easy to combine with Lisbon Cathedral, São Jorge Castle and other nearby viewpoints, and the Igreja de Santa Luzia church is steps away. The terrace looks out over the rooftops of Alfama and the Tagus River. Visitors can make out the façade of the Church of Santo Estêvão, the towers of the Church of São Miguel and the dome of Santa Engrácia. One guide adds that the view has been popular for decades. The setting is part of the appeal. Blue-and-white azulejo tiles, a vine-covered pergola, stone arches, verandas and a bougainvillea-covered terrace surround the view. The tile panels are more than decoration: they depict moments from Lisbon's history, including the 1147 Siege of Lisbon and Praça do Comércio before the 1755 earthquake. One visitor found some of the tiles faded and broken in person, and noted that the atmosphere people expect depends on the bougainvillea and creepers being in full bloom. Tram 28 and streetcar 12E both stop right before the miradouro. By metro, a short walk from the Terreiro do Paço stop leads into Alfama; from Príncipe Real, take the subway to Terreiro do Paço and walk 10 minutes. Morning and late afternoon are the suggested times to go, and there is no official timetable for the viewpoint itself. One writer suggests sunrise for a more intimate experience. A local tuk-tuk guide named Thomas says mornings are when influencers and photographers arrive for shoots, before the larger tourist crowds. Crowds are larger in summer; outside that season the weather is cooler and the crowds significantly smaller. The terrace is fairly small and feels cramped quickly once groups arrive. On a rainy late October afternoon, one visitor found it packed with tuk-tuk groups, photographers and tourists. Two sources agree it is worth a stop if you are already exploring Alfama. One of them adds that it is not worth crossing the city for if time in Lisbon is limited, while the other describes it as smaller, calmer and more personal than other viewpoints, a place where people stop for photos and stay a little longer than planned.
