Igreja dos ClérigosThe Igreja dos Clérigos, or Church of the Clerics, is in the Baixa district of Porto at Rua de São Filipe de Nery s/n, 4050-546 Porto. The church is in front of the Torre dos Clérigos. Both the church and the bell tower were designed by Nicolau Nasoni. The church has a dome over a single nave and has a Baroque façade with shells and other ornaments. The main altar is marble and is by Manuel dos Santos Porto. Nasoni was born in 1691 and moved to Porto in 1725. He designed many buildings including the Palácio do Arcebispo, the Church of Misericórdia, and the Loggia of Porto Cathedral. He also was a member of the Clérigos Brotherhood and was buried in the church. The first stone was laid in 1732 and the Brotherhood began using the church in 1748. The solemn ceremony was held in 1779. The tower was completed in 1763, when it received an iron cross atop and an image of St. Paul over the door. It was built apart from the church to improve acoustics for the bells, as is the Italian tradition. It once functioned as a lighthouse to aid sailors along the Douro. In the 19th century, it received an optical telegraph. It takes 240 stairs to reach the top. However, the view from up there encompasses the entire city and the river. It also takes in the São Bento Railway Station, Lello Bookstore and the Porto Cathedral. The association linked to the church dates back to 1642, when the Brotherhood of the Poor Clerics was founded. This was followed in 1654 by the Brotherhood of St. Peter ad Vincula, and in 1666 by the Congregation of St. Philip Neri. The three congregations decided, on the 18th of April, in the year of Our Lord 1707, to unite in fraternity. The tower and church were restored in 2014. The church is opened from 9 am to 7 pm. Entry to the church is free. There is a fee to go up the tower and to rent binoculars. Nearby, you can visit the São Bento railway station, and Centro Português de Fotografia, which is located in a former 18th century prison.BaixaChurches & Religious Sites
