Livraria Lello & IrmãoBaixa · Sights & LandmarksLivraria Lello & Irmão stands at Rua das Carmelitas 144, 4050-161 Porto, in the Baixa neighbourhood. It is also known as Livraria Chardron. The building dates from 1906, which makes the shop more than a century old, and it is known for its neo-Gothic architecture. Today it works as a fully active bookstore as well as an international tourist landmark. The interior features carved wood paneling and Gothic Revival arches, along with bronze bas-reliefs of Portuguese writers. A stained-glass skylight carries the Latin motto "Decus", which translates as dignity or honour. One guide suggests taking time over the sweeping red staircase, the ceiling and the columns at the sides. The shelves hold classic Portuguese literature, translations of international works and collector's editions, and there is a corner inspired by fantasy and magical themes. Rare items include first editions of classic novels, among them a copy of The Little Prince signed by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The shop is often linked with J.K. Rowling and Hogwarts, though sources disagree: one says she never visited, while another says it is often cited as one of the bookstores that inspired her while she lived in Porto. Visitors need a ticket, and each one comes with an €8 voucher to spend on books. Basic books start from €16, and several tickets cannot be combined for a single book, so one guide advises budgeting at least €20 per person. Buying a book online in advance brings a free event ticket and access to the express lane. Queues often spill onto the street once the doors open, and peak summer months bring large crowds. A guide recommends the late afternoon, ideally the last ticket slot, or a visit between September and November, when tourist season is low. Advice on booking varies: one source says tickets often sell out quickly at peak hours, while a family visiting on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 still found same-day timed-entry tickets at midday. The shop is closed on December 25, January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1 and June 24. By Metro, take line D to São Bento and walk eight minutes uphill along Rua dos Clérigos to Rua das Carmelitas. STCP city buses, Yellow Bus and City Sightseeing buses serve the area. There is no parking at the library, but Saba Praça de Lisboa is 150 metres away, and Parking Comércio do Porto - SABA, open round the clock, is 350 metres away.

On that site the entry is titled Porto Editora - Praça Filipa de Lencastre. The shop belongs to Porto Editora, a publisher founded in 1944 in Porto. Since its foundation the company has devoted itself to publishing books and other products for the areas of education and reference. Besides its own publications, the shop sells national and foreign books. Its range also takes in military cartography, stationery, maps, itineraries, gifts and samples. The company's contacts page gives Rua da Restauração, 365, 4099-023 Porto as its main address, which also serves its northern distribution. Opening hours are 09:00 to 19:00 from Monday to Friday, and the shop is closed on Sunday. For Saturday, the Visit Porto page shows opening from 09:00 to 13:00. Porto Editora's official contacts page lists this address among its bookshops in the northern zone, with the telephone number (+351) 22 200 76 81. The same page lists another bookshop, in the central zone, at Rua João Machado, 9-A, 3000-226 Coimbra. It also states that the bookshop in the southern zone closed permanently on 1 April 2021. For teachers, the page offers a Linha do Professor helpline on 22 605 67 47. Porto Editora also works beyond its shops. The English Wikipedia entry describes it as active in educational books, dictionaries and multimedia products, both offline and online. German Wikipedia says the group runs the free online encyclopedia Infopédia, the Diciopédia series and the Escola Virtual e-learning platform. Since 2008 it has operated Wook, an online service selling books and films. The same article says the company is a partner of Ernst Klett Verlag for joint German-Portuguese dictionaries, and that it took over the Portuguese business of Direct Group Bertelsmann in 2010. That purchase brought in the Círculo de Leitores book club and the Livraria Bertrand chain, which the article puts at 54 branches. It adds that the company continues to run its original Porto Editora bookshops.
