Mercado do BolhãoOpens in a new tabBolhão · Markets & Market HallsMERCADO DO BOLHÃOis located in Porto’s Bolhão district at Rua Sá da Bandeira 4000-214. The main entrance is located on Rua Formosa, with some sources listing the entrance as number 322. The market has a second, less-frequently used entrance on Rua de Fernandes Tomás. The Bolhão Metro station, which houses transport lines B, C, E and F, exits directly into the market. The uphill walk from São Bento takes approximately 10 minutes. According to some sources, the iron and glass construction of the market was completed in 1914. Other sources claim the building opened to the public in 1915. The market was originally constructed on the site of a 1837 marketplace. By the 2010s, the market was deteriorating. The iron support structures and drainage of the market became a major issue. The market closed in 2018. The work was completed in 2022. With the renovations, the market gained improved drainage and refrigeration. A central courtyard remains, with Iron support structures of the market housing retail stands and food service. As of now, there are 79 stalls. Many new vendors have opened shop in the last few years, but older vendors have and continue to operate in the meat, vegetable, and fish sections. There are families that have operated in the market for six generations. Moving through the market, from the fish stalls, there are fruit stands that make fresh juices and smoothies. On the other side, you will find fish and seafood stalls that sell and prepare shellfish. You will also find places to buy and try a variety of Portuguese cheeses, like Serra da Estrela and Queijo de Azeitão, as well as other local goat cheeses. Other items for sale include dried goods, and sausages. There are also a number of wine bars located in the market that sell tapas and Portuguese wines. The listed hours are 8 am to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday. The market is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
