Sé do PortoOpens in a new tabRibeira · Churches & Religious SitesSé do Porto, also called Porto Cathedral, is the principal religious building in Porto and one of the oldest monuments in the city. It stands at Terreiro da Sé in the Ribeira neighbourhood, perched high in the historic centre, and looks out over the city and the Douro River. The building is at once fortress-like and elegant. Its structure is Romanesque, yet Gothic chapels and Baroque additions have reshaped it over time. Guided tours are suggested as a way to understand the Romanesque foundations, the Gothic additions and the Baroque interventions, especially for anyone who enjoys historical storytelling. Inside, thick stone walls enclose the Romanesque core of the nave, where sober geometry and powerful arches create a space that is both intimate and monumental. The calm within contrasts with the lively city outside. The cloister is a highlight of the visit: Gothic structure meets blue-and-white azulejo tiles that narrate scenes, and light shifts across the arcades as you walk. Sacred art and sacred treasures are also part of the visit, and the cloisters are described as a quiet, reflective space. Outside, the terrace opens onto a wide panorama of the surrounding historic quarter, with terracotta rooftops, the river and the lines of the bridges below. From April to October the cathedral opens from 9:00 to 18:30, and from November to March it opens from 9:00 to 17:30. The complex is generally open daily, with liturgical services and tourist visits following separate rhythms. Opening and last-entry times can shift a little with the season, church events and religious celebrations, and access can differ on Sundays and feast days. Tourist areas may be limited during major religious ceremonies, solemn masses or diocesan events, so it is worth confirming current times shortly before a visit. Booking platforms sometimes offer timed entry or priority slots, so check what a ticket includes before buying. Reaching the cathedral on foot from São Bento, Ribeira or the upper town takes only minutes. From São Bento Station the walk uphill is short but steep, and travellers arriving at Campanhã can connect by metro or train to São Bento before continuing on foot. Several STCP bus routes stop near the cathedral area; alight near the upper historic district and walk a few minutes to Terreiro da Sé. Driving in the historic centre can be slow, with narrow streets, so using a nearby paid car park and walking the last stretch uphill is the suggested option.
