Boavista Futebol ClubeOpens in a new tabBoavista · Sports & FitnessBoavista Futebol Clube is located in the Boavista district of Porto and runs many different sporting activities but is most popular for its soccer (football) team. It is based at the Estadio do Bessa. It’s postal address is Rua Dr. Marques Carvalho 4100-365, Porto. The team was set up in 1903, when workers at Graham’s Textile Factory established a club. The home field, Campo do Bessa, opened in 1911. The soccer team is known as The Chequered Ones (Os Axadrezados) because of its black and white shirts. The team is also known as the Panthers. Boavista's first season in the Primeira Liga was in 1935. Since then, the team was relegated and promoted many times until 1974 when the manager José Maria Pedroto was appointed. With the help of Pedroto, the team won the first of two consecutive cups. The side lost the double chance in the 1975-1976 season by two points. Sánchez and his teammates won the cup in 1997. In the 2000-2001 season, under the management of Jaime Pacheco, Boavista won the Primeira Liga by a one-point advantage. Only 22 goals were scored against them the whole season. In the following season, they lost to Manchester United. Boavista was relegated from the Primeira Liga in the 2007-2008 season for involvement in the corruption scandal known as the Golden Whistle. In 2014, Boavista was promoted back to the Primeira Liga when the number of teams was increased to 18. Porto’s metro and the STCP buses give access to the ground. The Casa da Musica and Francos stations are the nearest. The walk from the center of Porto takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Most matches have tickets available for between 10 and 45 euros. Buy tickets online or at the stadium.
