The Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue is the sinagoga Kadoorie. It is in Porto at Rua João Martins Branco s/n, 4150-431, Boavista. It is the largest synagogue on the Iberian Peninsula and one of the largest in Europe, as described by Google. It is said to be a monument and symbol of the city of Oporto. The prayers rooms can accommodate 600 people, split between men and women, and there is a library that fills three rooms. The building houses facilities such as a mikveh, a store, a restaurant, and a industrial kitchen. The community that meets there consists of 1000 Jews living in Porto and the surrounding area, who are of 30 different nationalities. The community has a rav for each Ashkenazi and Sephardi communities, as well as a 3rd rav for the other student community. The faculty and staff of the synagogue include a librarian, and security. There are also administrative staff to help coordinate the many services. The Jewish community of Porto (Comunidade Israelita do Porto) has kept its administrative offices in the building for many years, but is now in a different location. We are open from Monday to Thursday from 09:30 to 13:00 and from 14:30 to 17:30 and from Friday from 09:30 to 13:00 and from 14:30 to 16:30. We are closed on Saturday and Sunday. The city has one of the oldest Jewish communities of Portugal. As the Portuguese city of Lisbon suffered from the 1755 earthquake, Porto was spared and the streets of the Jewish quarter of Porto still exist and bear names such as Rua Monte Judeus and Escadinhas do Monte dos Judeus. The Main Synagogue of Porto once existed on Escadas da Vitória. A synagogue once existed on Rua da Sinagoga. Jews were allowed to reside in the town by the Bishop of Porto.
